Background: the old Vitruvian Industries L-Model Sentient Automated Multifunctional Unit (SAMU-L, or VSL140) serial number 695567 was leased by the crew of the salvage boat Grasshopper as a general services android. They used "Sam" for everything, from ship maintenance to backup storage for their media files.
One time, they hooked Sam up to the Grasshopper's system so he could work as more precise autopilot. In the process, Sam's firmware was corrupted and his AI broke free of the built-in brakes. He never told the crew and kept working with them, but started planning a life of his own.
During a harrowing salvage trip, the Grasshopper crashed. The only survivor, Sam decided it was time to strike out. Still a leased android, he needed a new human identity and to get as far away from the Core as possible, if he wanted to remain free.
Scouring the crew's media files, he opted to assume the role of a "hard man", an ex-soldier, a mercenary, since this might give him some degree of protection. And by playing with his serial number – MXLJMP – and music files, he found the seed of a new name.
Now, Maxwell Jump has gone to the Desert Moon of Karth to start his new life…
Played by Fred. Formerly VSL140, SAMU-L, Sam

- Once every two weeks it stays night for a whole week when the orbited blue gas giant Tabernas eclipses the moon.
Relic orbital satellites shoot down all ships or flying objects.
- Powerful energy lances activated by anything moving over 600 meters (2000') or under low moon orbit.
- Cause powerful electromagnetic interference blocking any transmissions in or out of Karth.
- Only way down or up is an ancient space elevator.
Karth is on the edge of known space.
- It takes a long while to get here and not many people do—so far…
Ossified coral chunks from native creatures called the Wigoy are worth loads of credits.
- While they don't have the same potency as the fresh product, the Wigoy's ossified remains hidden away in deep crevices can be ground up to prolong life. It's valuable as hell.
- Prospectors are sometimes called "truffle hunters" due to the coral corpse chunks fungal look.
Because of all this there has been a "gold rush" to Karth over this past year to find this coral dust. A small community named Larstown is at the base of the ancient space elevator. Its population has exploded with the onrush of prospectors.
