If one wishes to do business in Natchez, one does business with Eliza. Through an elaborate series of fronts and dummy corporations, Eliza creates the wealth that makes eternal unlife on the river comfortable for all who keep their place, and untenable for any who would shake the iron rule of, "Wait your turn."
