Layout of a Laboratory Ship

Best guess is that the bridge is the section in the lower left of the picture on page 121. On top of that is the stateroom section (bottom of schematic, page 122, right column). Below the bridge is the Flight Deck, and below that is Sensor/Turret access. The back bulge (upper right of the picture on 121) is engineering on top and both fuel decks below. The labs are in the circular part with the middle shaft being an access tube to the pinnace. Please correct me if you see otherwise. I am not sure this makes total sense but never understood the Lab ship layout anyway.

Leonard's "descent" to Engineering would be through part of the loop and then "up" the other shaft at the "aft" of the ship. That okay?

As he looked at the chopped up files, trying to make sense of them, Peter remembered one of his undergrad cryptology classes. A visiting speaker had talked about how difficult accidental encryption was to understand and decipher. As Peter fussed and fidgeted with the files the "chopped up" nature turned to one of "guess the machine". He was able to find bits of readable data in reverse binary format but longer data sets were impossible. At least, not without some time and effort.

However, he could possibly partition off the historical data and maybe boot the systems from non-writable machine instruction. Some data might be lost, of course, but he could potentially regain control of the machine that way. Lose potential scientific data?

[Engineering] Corporal Leonard Eveeda

Leonard's helmet light and vidicam played down the darkened shaft as he pulled himself along. Like most commercial space craft, the "State of the Art" was not meant to be wormed through without lights and power. Leonard had enough experience in the bowels of ships to tell the difference.

His experience also told him there were only two ways to really "lose" a ship and all evidence of its passing. Send it into the nearest star or talk to "Shears" Veneto. Odds were on Shears to do a better job. Might even be a little profit margin as well. The joke was that Shears could make an Imperial Light Cruiser "get lost". Leonard had seen enough knowing nods and hidden smiles; it might not be a rumor.

Any issues of forcing the Engineering hatch open are moot. Whatever blast happened blew through part of the frame and made a few meter sized openings. Leonard noticed that the metal shear was into the shaft.
