<Park of the Black Hope

Overview:[edit]

Spanning nearly 850 hectares on the southern outskirts of Paris, the Parc de l’Espérance Noire is a vast, brooding expanse of forested groves, shadowed lakes, crumbling pavilions, and silent avenues. Though officially established as a public garden under the Second Empire, the park has long held a darker reputation as the preferred field of honor for duels—legal or otherwise—among Paris’s elite, military officers, artists, and criminals alike.

Location:[edit]

A (fictional southern mirror to the Bois de Boulogne,) the park lies near the edge of the 15th and 16th arrondissements, stretching beyond the limits of the city walls. Its location provides seclusion but remains accessible via private carriage or discreet cab from central Paris.

Reputation and Atmosphere:[edit]

While families stroll along the manicured northern lawns during the day, the deeper southern portions—nicknamed Les Ombres Rouges (“The Red Shadows”)—are thick with tangled underbrush, weeping beeches, and narrow trails. Fog often drifts in from the artificial lake, Lac du Serment, a dark oval with a tiny island where many duels are rumored to have ended with one man not returning.

Parc de l’Espérance Noire is whispered about in cafés and fencing salons:

  • “The duelists’ sanctuary.”
  • “Where honor bleeds and vanishes in mist.”
  • “The last place you’ll see your enemy—and perhaps the sky.”

Notable Features:[edit]

L’Orangerie des Larmes[edit]

An orangery with frosted glass, a popular dueling site due to its eerie acoustics and vine-choked stone arches. Attendants harvest oranges for exclusive tables.

La Galerie des Sables[edit]

A long, open stretch of pale gravel flanked by cypress trees, perfect for pistols. Marksmen often duel here at dawn. An archery range is here for practicing Archery. Archery Societies meet here as well as Dueling Societies.

Maison du Reclus[edit]

A secluded hunting lodge at the park's northern edge, once used by minor nobility. Now, it serves as a meeting spot for seconds, fencing masters, and those arranging illicit duels. (Northern corner, not shown on the map)

La Saarce[edit]

Near an opening and Cafes across the street. This field is known for grand dances with pavilions. Occasionally tournaments.

La Marse[edit]

A dense woods known for lover's trysts and for dueling.

Dueling Traditions in the Park:[edit]

Early mornings or moonlit hours are favored.

Pistols at thirty paces or sabers drawn under the judgment of a fencing master.

Code duello[[1]] is followed by tradition, but outcomes are often handled off the record by bribed gendarmes or sympathetic aristocrats.

Legends:[edit]

Some say the park is cursed—no duel fought on L’île des Cendres (the island in Lac du Serment) ends without blood spilled. A phantom fencing master is rumored to train lost souls in the fog. The roses near the Orangerie are said to bloom brightest where a life has ended.
