History[edit]

Philip Rice was brought up in the Community of Light, a commune on the distant periphery of Montreal. The people there largely shunned modern living, seeing it as the cause of today’s societies moving away from harmony and understanding. Thus children like Philip were tutored within the commune, learning the Lightbringers’ brand of astrology and mysticism along reading, writing and arithmetic. A gregarious and outgoing boy, Philip seemed cut out for the role of spiritual advisor (read: fortune teller). Nicknamed Sunbeam for his radiant smile and joyful nature, he enjoyed his time there immensely from then on, as his special gifts brought him a lot of attention and prestige. It was a view, he found, not shared by those outside the Community.

Most city-folk within Montreal dismissed him as just another charlatan, even though he was typically charging a fraction of what a dedicated fraudster might be. He was deeply hurt by this, as he’d been told he had a true gift of reading people’s psyche, but he took it in his stride – after all, they were only acting this way because their loveless lives had hardened them to joy.

His life was smashed to flinders when a passing Sabbat pack literally snatched him off the roadside – the last he remembers was a hand like marble closing around his face, and then he awoke in his grave.

A feeling so unfamiliar welled up inside him at this treatment. There were no colours in his world of blackness, but he felt on fire. How dare he be rewarded for a life of harmony and happiness by being thrown in a pine box and buried? Fingers curled like claws, he smashed and tore his way to the top with a speed that surprised his new pack. The man stank of patchouli and had flowers in his hair when he went down – they’d scarcely hoped he’d make it up to the surface at all.

During the nights that followed, he returned to the placid man he had formerly been, although he felt his eyes were now fully opened. He was a part of the modern world now. A life of pacifism and flower-power had turned him into an undead parasite. The only way to survive in the real world was to meet its harsh realities face-on.

His pack recognised in a great knack for coercion and manipulation, as well as a deep interest in the occult – in fact, his hunger for more of the Sabbat’s lore was only outstripped by his thirst for blood. He was let loose on a local templar’s library, and he managed to soak up an amazing amount of lore in only a few months. Now, he serves as one of the more personable faces of the pack, as well as a lookout and scout.

Personality[edit]

Most of the time, Philip presents as a very calm and laid back man who will happily chat with subjects that interest him – typically, this is the ritual and mystic underpinnings of occultism, and the Sabbat in particular. However, his Malkavian Embrace has left him with a hair-trigger, and this is when he exemplifies his nickname; a primal thing that can destroy an unwary Cainite if not treated carefully.

Appearance[edit]

While he’s managed to shed his hemp clothing and patchouli oil, Philip still has his long dark hair (now tied back with a simple band). He also travels with a multitude of icons and charms on thongs around his neck, and his arrival is usually heralded with a soft tinkling and clanking as they knock together. Most of the time he dresses in very simple clothes – T-shirts, boots and jeans.

Tarot cards, I-Ching sticks, rune stones, pendulums, crystals and other assorted New Age paraphenalia
