RPGnet City of Heroes/City of Villains Resources[edit]

First and foremost, join the "rpgnet" channel in order to be able to chat with the rest of us, no matter what server you're on. To join, either right click on a chat tab and choose "join channel", or use the command:

/chanjoin RPGnet

A lot of people use binds to make it so that when they press a key (the p key in the example below), they can just start typing and have the text go to the rpgnet channel.

examples:

/bind p "beginchat /send rpgnet "

/bind p "beginchat /send rpgnet [$name $level +VIR] "

Supergroups/Villaingroups[edit]

Supergroup Server Description
The Liberty Alliance Freedom The old-guard of Paragon with historical and cosmic ties
The Royal Family Freedom A family of adventurers
Court Royale Freedom Offshoot of the Royal Family (for folks without the 'Royal' surname)
The Young Paragons Freedom/Liberty Youth oriented with teen angst
The Wrong Place Freedom Mostly just a nightclub for the coalition to go to.
The Penultimates Virtue A loose collection of like-minded heroes (all of Dunlaing's heroside characters...but we're happy to join coalitions and team and stuff)
The Family Royale Virtue An alternate-world version of the Royal Family (pretty much nothing story-wise in common, just theme and name style)
The Inappropriates Virtue The unofficial low-maintenance RP-friendly RPGNet supergroup
The Intolerables Virtue Like the Inappropriates, but, you know, evil.
The Army of One Victory Catch-all villain group. Odds and ends and everything in between.
The Uncanny Legion Triumph Good crew mostly, even if we do have our occasion "The hell are you doing?" moments. Also, home of the Multiple MANIACS
The Wasted Youth Freedom The Young Paragons' Evil Counterpart, only most of the members are much more interested in just raising hell than trying to take over the world or something.
The Crime Family Freedom Much like the Royals, they all share the last name Crime.
The Lords of the Abyss Freedom A catchall group with a demonic leader.
The Regal Family Freedom The Praetorian version of the Royals.

COH/COV's "Guide to Guides" - Your #1 resource for COH faqs.

Invention/Consignment tutorial video from NCSoft, hosted by MMORPG.com. About 4 or so minutes of your time.

ParagonWiki is another invaluable resource. Some good topics for new players:

  • Hero Story Arc which can help you find story arcs to play through. No wandering around aimlessly, plus an asset for role-players wanting to take on certain storylines/enemy groups for RP-purposes.
  • Enhancements - A good overview of City of Heroes/Villain's Enhancement system (enhancements being the closest thing to actual equipment in COx).
  • Consignment House - Now that you can create things, there's a place to sell them at too. Its different than what other games have to offer - its not like a City of Heroes eBay.

FAQ - This FAQ was put together by people on LiveJournal, and was then linked to by a dev on the forums.

The CoH Livejournal Community also has a great many active players.

For City of Villains players, Khaiba's Mastermind Numeric Keypad Pet Controls are head and shoulders above the default Mastermind pet interface and can spare a player many pet-related headaches.

  • City of Data - If you want to see power related numbers and aren't logged in or want to compare multiple sets against each other easily

What's Changed Since I Left?[edit]

Issue 6: Villains! and Bases. - i6 was largely about introducing CoV. It also contained the dreaded ED nerf. - The short form of ED is if you try to slotmore than 3 of the same type of SO level enhancement into your power you suffer extremely diminishing returns on the 4th - 6th ones (like instead of 33% they add about 1%). - If you have some i5 alts that you like to play who are in the 22+ range you'll probably want to respec them to be inline with ED.

Issue 6.5 Pocket D - Not technically an issue but for the Valentines day event Pocket D was added to the game as a place where Heroes and Villains could meet on neutral turf. Holiday missions that originate in Pocket D also allow heroes and villains to team up together.

Issue 7: Newspaper and Mayhem missions and level 40-50 (all) for Villains - Newspaper missions are accessed by typing /newspaper which brings up a list of 3 missions in the current zone, scaled to your level. These are endlessly available so no more running out of missions from contacts and needing to street sweep for a level or two. If you do enough newspaper missions (3-5 depending on level) your broker offers a Mayhem mission - Mayhem missions involve robbing a bank in Paragon City. You have 15 minutes to do so. Also there are side missions like Arsons that can get you temp powers and accolades. You can earn more time in Mayhem missions by going nuts and blowing stuff up (cars, bus stops, fire hydrants etc).

Issue 8: Radio and Safeguard missions for Heroes and Faultline revamp - Faultline the all but abandoned hero zone at the bottom end of Skyway got a *HUGE* revamp and is now one of the coolest zones in the game. 4 new story arcs added as well as a special store that lets you get some SOs before level 22.

Issue 9: Inventions - Probably *the* most game changing issue to date. - Inventions are a giant topic, but pretty much they're all to the good. If you don't want to hassle with them they're completely optional. If you do work with them though they can vastly improve what you can do.

Issue 10: Rikti War Zone - The Rikti War Zone is a revamp of the Rikti Crash Site. - It's now open for level 35-50. - Heroes and Villains co-op in the zone, so you can play mixed teams. - There are 5 new arcs here + a Task Force + a zone level Raid (which happen fairly frequently on Triumph at least).

Issue 11: Ouroboros - The new Time Travel zone - level 25+. - a new story arc, 6 new Task Forces (3 for each side, the zone's not co-op but is available as separate instances to both h and v - the tf's are also soloable to a degree.) - "Flashback" functionality lets you revisit earlier story arcs from contacts. You are level capped back to the range of the contact and can run their missions for badges or temp powers you may have missed previously. - The Ouroboros Portal power is gained in a variety of ways and is *incredibly* handy for moving around in general since it recharges in 5 minutes and the exit from Ouroboros into Talos is right near the auction house and the tram.

There's a lot more too including new sets, a *huge* change to the way Blaster Defiance works and other tweaks and fixes. Overall though it's a much better game than it was back in fall 2005 (aka post i5).

Issue 11.5: Real Numbers! Almost forgot the most droolworthy (to me anyways) update: In February they rolled out another mini-expansion. There was a special limited time mission you could do related to Manticore and Sister Psyche's wedding (kinda a lame mission to be honest) and WAY COOLER than that....we finally got a way to see the real numbers that are going on for our powers!

If you're not Arithmophobic check under your Powers -> Combat Attributes to see a whole bunch of handy info on your character. Like what your defense levels really are, what your current stealth radius is and so on. Also you can check your combat tab to see on a shot by shot basis what chance you had to hit someone and what number was "rolled" for that hit.

Issue 14 : Mission Architect User created story content on an unprecedented scale. Within the first day of it going live there were over 10,000 story arcs published and the number is increasing all the time.

Arcs made by RPGNet users are listed here and discussed here.

Issue 15 : Anniversary The return of the 5th Column

Issue 16 : Power Spectrum Change the colors of your powers omg this is the best thing ever. Only works on your primary and secondary powers, sadly, not pools or APPs or the like. In a few cases, there are alternate animations for the powers as well as or instead of recolors.

Issue 17 : Dark Mirror Switches Positron TF from "suck" to "awesome." Adds a new Hero arc (widely liked) and Villain arc (widely thought to assume your character to be a chump). A bunch of interesting new mission technologies like enter a mission in one zone, exit it to another, and (SPOILER). Quality of life and interface enhancements.

Issue 18 : Going Rogue Issue 18 supports the paid expansion Going Rogue. With GR, you can swap characters from hero to villain or vice-versa, or start Praetorian characters who are somewhat shades-of-gray. A ton of new level 1-20 content out of Praetoria. Extensive retconning of past Praetorian facts. Hero and villain auction house/markets merged. Four new power sets (Kinetic Melee, Electric Control, Dual Pistols, Demon Summoning). Lots of new costume bits. All auras now available in "combat" versions. Lots of other stuff. Without paying for the expansion, there's not a whole lot to this issue.
