Character Study: Ecthrois Grimm – The Penitent Lich-Vampire[edit]
Ecthrois Grimm is a tragic figure—a once-tyrannical lich-vampire who ruled through necromantic terror, only to experience a profound repentance at the height of his power. Now, he wanders the world as a cursed immortal, seeking redemption while his former creations (undead legions, vengeful vampires, and betrayed necromancers) hunt him—yet dare not face him directly, for fear of his lingering control over them.
- Voice: Hollow, echoing, with moments of startling clarity when remorse hits.
- Mannerisms:
- Stares at his hands when reminded of past atrocities.
- Leaves gold/gems at orphanages or churches anonymously.
- Refuses to kill unless absolutely necessary (uses *Sleep*, *Hold Person*, etc.).
- Irony: The more he helps, the more his curse spreads (flowers wilt in his presence, food rots if he touches it).
- Reluctant Mentor: Could aid PCs against undead threats, but his presence risks turning allies against them.
- Final Redemption? Destroying his phylactery would kill him—would the PCs help him die, or force him to keep atoning?
- Villainous Legacy: His old vampire spawn plot to trick him into commanding them again, while necromancers seek his secrets.
Core Concept & Backstory[edit]
- Race: Undead (Lich/Vampire Hybrid)
- Classes:
- Necromancy Wizard (20) – Master of death magic.
- Oathbreaker Paladin (7+) – Formerly a blackguard, now a fallen knight without a cause.
- Shadow Sorcerer (6+) – Innate darkness fuels his magic.
- Alignment: Neutral Evil → True Neutral (Penitent)
- Key Themes:
- Redemption Through Suffering – He knows he may never be forgiven, but he tries anyway.
- The Burden of Command – His undead minions hate him but cannot defy him if he exerts his will.
- A Living Curse – His very existence spreads decay, making true atonement difficult.
The Phylactery: "The Grimoire of Final Tears"[edit]
Ecthrois’ phylactery is not a typical soul jar—it is a sentient, cursed tome that weeps black ink when opened.
- Form: A massive, leather-bound grimoire with iron clasps, its pages filled with shifting necrotic runes.
- Hidden Location: The book is hidden , tethered to a single mortal anchor—a silver locket containing a portrait of his long-dead love (the only remnant of his humanity).
- Special Properties:
- Soul-Siphon: If destroyed, Ecthrois can die—but the book reforms over 1d100 years, pulling his consciousness back.
- Sentient & Tormented: The book whispers regrets to those who read it, forcing Wisdom saves or suffering despair.
- Necrotic Tether: Any undead within 30 ft. of the book must obey Ecthrois’ last command to them (if he ever gave one).
Powers & Abilities (D&D 5e Inspired)[edit]
Lich-Vampire Hybrid Traits:[edit]
- Undead Nature: Immune to poison, disease, exhaustion; doesn’t need air.
- Regeneration: Heals 20 HP/turn unless hit by radiant damage or running water.
- Sunlight Hypersensitivity: Takes 20 radiant damage/turn in sunlight (he endures it as penance).
- Legendary Resistances (3/day).
Necromantic Mastery:[edit]
- Command Undead (At Will): Any undead of CR ≤ his Wizard level must obey or flee.
- Create Undead (No Cost): Can raise Wights, Vampire Spawn, or Specters without material components.
- Soul Cage (1/Day): Traps a dying creature’s soul to fuel his spells.
Signature Spells:[edit]
- Homebrew: "Grimm’s Lament" (6th-level Necromancy) – All undead in 1 mile *remember their past lives* for 1 minute—some flee in horror, others become enraged.
- "Black Sacrament" (9th-level Ritual) – Sacrifices a willing soul to destroy his phylactery (he refuses to use it).
Magic Items:[edit]
- "The Blood Crown" (Artifact): A circlet of black iron and rubies, allows him to see through the eyes of any undead he’s ever created.
- "The Penitent’s Chain" (Cursed): A spiked silver chain wrapped around his ribs—deals 1d6 necrotic damage/turn but grants advantage on saves vs. charm/fear.
Quote:[edit]
- "I do not ask for forgiveness. I only ask that my hands might do some good before the dark reclaims me."*
