STA-A Badge of Gold
A Badge of Gold[edit]
A Badge of Gold Campaign and its subordinate adventures are run under the ruleset of First Edition Star Trek Adventures.
Setting[edit]
It is the year 2270, Stardate 6059 (about a year prior to the events as seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It is a time of change within Star Fleet: new technologies are being introduced, new uniforms are slowly filtering out into the rank and file. The Fleet itself is growing and expanding quickly, equally quickly, ships are rotating through the various dockyards gaining upgrades and improvements, and the consequence of this is that the rest of the fleet is being spread perhaps more thinly than what could be considered prudent.
Nevertheless, this is the situation as we find it. Smaller ships doing the job of much larger vessels; task forces are being split apart to ensure fleet coverage where needed, and more junior officers are finding themselves on the proverbial edge of the sword, conducting necessary and needed diplomacy, and here needed, providing the defensive force where necessary throughout the Federation Borders.
Definitions[edit]
ICW Improved Conventional Warp. About Stardate 4657.5, which corresponds to the year 2268, the USS Enterprise encountered extra-galactic survivors of a starship crash; using advanced technology, this species (known as "Kelvans", and who claimed to come from the Andromeda galaxy) took control of the Enterprise and proceeded to modify it in order to return to their home galaxy. After engine and structural modifications, the command crew managed to retake control of the Enterprise and came to a satisfactory agreement with the Kelvans. The changes made to the Enterprise were analyzed and integrated into Fleet Design for new starships. ICW allowed speeds in excess of what was then Warp 15, and these changes are slowly filtering out into the fleet, with the result that the Warp Speed Scales are currently being reworked to fit within the '10-scale' of travel.

Synopsis[edit]
Mission Brief[edit]
FOUO – Classification Aleph Green, Fleet Operations and Vessel Command Staff
USS Remagen is to proceed to the Valer system (Arteline Sub Sector); rising tensions along the Federation / Romulan border in years following the ceding of the system in the aftermath of the Romulan War and subsequent positioning of a security listening post after the probing missions of the Romulan Fleet on Stardate 1709.2 * required the bi-annual dispatch of an armed craft.
The USS Remagen is to treat to Valer IV as a formal Port of Call upon entry for purposes of appearances only, shore leave is authorized only at Commanders Discretion, and in keeping with fleet emphasis on research, will conduct scanning of Valer VI following an anomalous report from planetary sensor readings. The normal compliment of 144 torpedoes for the Remagen is reduced to a total of 104 to accommodate thirty-six total sensor probes of various types laid aboard Remagen in order to accommodate and reinforce the peaceful nature of the mission.
Upon completion of the primary objective, Remagen will patrol Arteline Sector border from 112 mark 170 to 092 mark 219 until Star Date 6146.3 (late 2271) or until otherwise relieved by receipt of subsequent mission orders.
The Valer System[edit]
Valer System has seven worlds:
- Valer I – III are nothing more than a series of rocky, burnt out hulks, ranging from the dwarf planet of Valer I through the larger bodies of Valer II and III; none of which have atmosphere. Despite this, Valer III has indications of mineable, useful metals; mining would be a small trick, as it is tidally locked to the stellar primary, and averages about 470 Kelvin, or 200 Celsius.
- Valer IV is just barely on the boundary between inhospitable and hospitable, the atmosphere is thin, though relatively high winds scour the otherwise rocky and dusty-covered surface. It is close to Terra in size, but still resembles Mars in all other respects.
- Valer V is the Class M world, with light population clustered around a half-dozen cities and numerous agricultural facilities.
- Valer VI is a classed J-type gas giant, a dingy brown and otherwise unremarkable subgiant, barely worthy of the title and utterly inert, with less than normal radiant EM activity radiating as normally found from such planetary giants; USS Remegan has partial removal of normal torpedo load, which is replaced with deep space sensor probes for research of the reported EM anomalies reported by Valer V.
- Valer VII is a sub-giant world with an erratic orbit and a half-dozen moons, not unlike Uranus.
The Arteline sector was part of the cede to the Federation that concluded the Romulan war a century previous. At one time, Valor VI, a gas-giant, supported an orbital Romulan forward outpost and supply station, abandoned by the Romulans in accordance with the applicable NZ treaty and subsequently destroyed by the Romulans upon abandonment.
The Federation has a thriving series of mining colonies and early-warning sensor station coordination center on Valor V.
