Background

Joan de Lafayette was born in 1914-- just as the great war began, and just as her father went off to fight the Germans-- and die in the trenches. Despite this early tragedy, Joan's childhood was still an idyllic one, raised by her grandparents in a small village outside of Marsielle. Her upbringing was quite like that of any other young French girl-- save for the fact that her Grandfather made it a point to teach her his own esoteric style of Savate, incorporating techniques from other martial arts he'd encountered during his own experience as a sailor on a tramp steamer, decades earlier.

But any village, no matter how idyllic, would never be big enough, exciting enough for a young girl like Joan. At the age of 18, she set out to Paris, grandest city in the world. There, she soon fell in with the artistic set, and established herself as a cabaret singer of some talent. Her Savate lessons proved surprisingly useful in this career, as Joan could easily deal with handsy producers or the occasional criminal trying to extort the theatre she performed in.

When the Germans attacked again, Joan found herself swept up into the conflict. She soon learned to pose as a flighty, airheaded cabaret singer, which allowed her to collect intelligence from drunken German officers. But Joan was not content to merely gather information-- it wasn't long before she acted on it. Taking on the title Milady de Winter, after the character from the Dumas novel, she started hunting SS officers, dispatching them with quick, cold efficiency. But such resistance didn't go unnoticed, and before long one Col. Kreig of the German intelligence service was trying to track down this mystery assassin.

And so, Joan was forced to flee. Her grandfather was able to call in an old favor to have Joan smuggled across the Mediterranean. She's since made contact with British intelligence, where she can once again put her skills to good use.

Personality wise, Joan is quite jaded at the age of 26 (practically an old maid by French standards!). In the fight against fascism, she is ruthlessly efficient-- and quite proud of it. Sometimes, after too many glasses of wine, Joan will lament her lost innocence-- she only wanted to sing, dammit. She'll never be the young and idealistic girl she once was, but if she can fight hard enough, perhaps future generations will have an easier go of it.
