Chapter 14

-->| YOU (Angelo) have joined #nobilis
<Knockwood> no, Italy probably doesn't have DST...
<Angelo> Hi all!
<Knockwood> speak of the devil
<Angelo> dst?
<Knockwood> Daylight Savings Time. Our clocks were bumped ahead an hour over the weekend.
<BethE> Hi Angelo!
<Angelo> we have
<Knockwood> so, technically, the game should have started about 42 minutes ago. Will that screw up your schedule, Angelo?
<Angelo> no
<Angelo> no but our time is going to change later that your
<Random_Nerd> Oh, hey.
<BethE> *nodnod* Understandable. Silly American government.
<Angelo> so you waited for me? I'm ashamed of the inconvenience... I'm sorry
<Random_Nerd> Sorry about the daylight savings time thing.
<Knockwood> well, you and Brian, because otherwise we're missing half our players
=-= YOU are now known as Ftisk
<Ftisk> well 2/5 of the player
=-= BethE is now known as Theresa
<Random_Nerd> I'm not a player, really.
=-= Knockwood is now known as DanteE
<Ftisk> *blush* right...
<DanteE> yeah, he just holds the hoops we jump through...
<Theresa> He's an elaborate AI.
<Ftisk> and you married an ai? how weird?... :-P
<Random_Nerd> Made of tinkertoys and string!
<Ftisk> can compete wity ftisk body! but IT have a washingmachine also!
<Theresa> Marrying an AI was quite simple and it saves on going out together.
<Theresa> So, where were we?
<Random_Nerd> Talking with Shadows, if I recall correctly.
<Ftisk> yes true
<DanteE> right, we'd just introduced Ftisk
<Theresa> ANd talking about his other self on the other side.
<DanteE> (which made me wonder, cuz it sounds like RN and I are interpreting the first UF in different ways)
<Ftisk> <DanteE> "Speaking of which, we've got a new Noble helping us out.
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> (can we stop soon?)
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Oh?"
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> (Yeah, it is getting late.)
<Ftisk> <Theresa> (See, this is what happens when RN and I have lots of caffeine late at night...)
<Ftisk> <DanteE> (Do your intro first. :)
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> "Hi I'm Ftiskaaaahk Sn'Gnok"
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> "Made by Vulcan and Machinery domine, isa pleasure to meet you"
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Vulcan as in the god?"
<Ftisk> * Ftisk float a bit lower ad then raise in a simil.bow
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> "Yes the God that the Greeks got near right"
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Cool."
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> "yesssss"
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> (Shall we stop here?)
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> (ok!!)
<Ftisk> <DanteE> (OK, though... did I get any idea of when the memory came from?)
<Ftisk> <Ftisk> (I don't have any... :-( )
<Ftisk> <Random_Nerd> ________STOP__________|
<Random_Nerd> There, that works.
<Random_Nerd> Ready to start?
<Theresa> (UF?)
<Ftisk> yes I'm ready
<Theresa> (Ready.)
<DanteE> (Sure)
<Random_Nerd> (Oh, yes. And yeah, I'm taking a slightly different slant on the High Summonings stuff, largely because I had to integrate it into an existing game rather than starting with a new one.)
<Theresa> "We seem to be meeting all sorts of Nobles lately. Mostly because of being in front of the Council and surviving."
<Ftisk> (is a nice plot device to insert new nobles)
<Random_Nerd> (But on the other hand, when the next UF comes out and introduces the Merit attribute, I've been ready for that for years.)
<DanteE> (more like 'if')
<Theresa> (A very good plot device.  :) )
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I would like the record to show that I hung out with you before it was popular."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Now, of course, I need to shun you, because you've sold out. All your current work is so... commercial."
<DanteE> "No problem, we're planning an unplugged album."

  • Ftisk don't get the joke because emotion are not enough refined in ftisk

<Theresa> "Still, you have a better survival record than a Spinal Tap drummer.
<Theresa> "
<Theresa> "Besides, I'
<Theresa> m branching out in new directions!"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Somewhat, at least."
<DanteE> (and I thought _we_ were the ones who do silly plant puns)
<DanteE> "But... like I said. Anything odd happen right about then?"
<Theresa> (I get punished at home for doing puns. I figured it was worth it..>)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I think strange things have been happening out there for a while."
<DanteE> "What do you mean?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I don't know the details. I don't have enough presence Outside yet. But the lesser things beyond the wall are antsy. I think that may be why it's getting easier to summon them."
<DanteE> "Easier?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Either something about the Wall makes it easier to summon, or the things out there /want/ to come in, or the arts I use are more effective in some otherway."
<DanteE> "... hm. HOw smart are the things you summon?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Human level, or a bit below, or a bit above. Not always human /style/, mind."
<DanteE> "I don't suppose you've ever just asked one what's going on?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "But I don't summon anything much dumber than the aespecti... those little things made of space and perspective, and I try not to summon anything a lot smarter than me."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I have, but they haven't given useful answers yet."
<DanteE> "Probably a good idea. You're courting enough trouble summoning things bigger than your head."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "But I've been thinking about what you said earlier this week, and I think you're right. It took my predecessor years to get as advanced in his studies as I've gotten already, and I've nearly surpassed him."
<DanteE> (Actually... his work means all shadows are extra-creation in nature, right?)
<Random_Nerd> (Ambiguous. There's probably some reason why Barakiel choses the Powers of Shadows to study these things, but it could be something else.)
<Theresa> "Do you think it's because of the stuff you've done on the other side with your other self?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "We all have to do that. But it seems to be easier to do now, as far as I can tell."
<DanteE> (OK, wild idea: find someplace that's neutral ground, have Shadows summon something smarter, and ask it nicely.)
<Theresa> (What would be neutral? And would we get in trouble?)
<DanteE> "Shadows... when you've asked them things, does it seem like they don't want to answer, or that they can't answer?"
<Ftisk> (troubles are always fun!)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I think they don't know, or at least that they don't know much."
<DanteE> "Hm... that actually goes with our hypothesis that coming through the wall screws with memory/"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Let's see. There are some reports that summoning was stronger near the end of the last Age than it was after the current one started. But we don't have history farther back than that, since nobody I'm aware of practiced it in the First Age, or even early Second."
<DanteE> (What was the 1st-2nd age transition?)
<Random_Nerd> (The Fall.)
<DanteE> "So, summoning got tougher right around The Fall?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I don't think we even knew how to do it back then."
<DanteE> "Did your predecessor leave notes?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Near as I can tell, the arts started being developed around when the Wildlords and later the Excrucians showed up. Sparked an interest in Outside, I figure."
<Theresa> "Makes sense."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "But around when the Excrucians first came in, I think it was easier. Maybe they made a bunch of holes in the wall coming through, or something, and the Imperators later strengthened the Wall."
<DanteE> "If that's true, recent events would seem to indicate ... urk."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Yes, he left notes. He was the first one to bring the perspective creatures through, for instance."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "But they were more his personal lab notes than a general primer on the subject."
<DanteE> "Can we get a copy?"
<Ftisk> (I wonder If someone can develop a active script for relity holes)
<Ftisk> (using the holes in the wall as the comunication media)
<Random_Nerd> (IP-over-fluctuations-in-reality?)
<Ftisk> (well we have IP over writing already manifestect)
<DanteE> (Oddly enough, there's an IC idea there...
<Theresa> (Someone would charge anything that came through.)
<DanteE> (Would they? We know both sides have Active Writing, and Sam and William have already proven it can communicate over distance)
<Random_Nerd> (Well, it seemed to be faint when just going across town. But on the other hand, they're just relearning how to do it.)
<Theresa> (If a profit can be made, someone will try to charge you for it.)
<Ftisk> (We ned a volunteer to do a test)
<DanteE> (Who do we know on the other side?)
<Ftisk> (uhm... suebi?)
<DanteE> "Shadows... how exactly do you communicate with your other-side self?"
<Random_Nerd> (And the other Shadows, of course.)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "We don't really talk face to face, as such. It's more... okay, close your eyes and wave your hands about. Without opening your eyes, you still know where your left pinky finger is, right?"
<DanteE> "yes..."
<Theresa> "Uhh..."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "It's a little like that. It isn't easy, and I'm still learning how to do it."

  • Theresa would kinda like to know where her left pinky is, at the moment.

<DanteE> "Could you send something to him?"
<Ftisk> "But you can see yourself outside?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "A physical object, or what?"
<DanteE> "Right, an object. We may be able to do some communicating soon.
<Ftisk> (ops Dante is going in my direction)
<DanteE> "In the meantime... a copy of those lab notes might help us in the task you-know-who charged us with."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I've never seen him, but I can just tell that he's there. And since we're working from the same basic principles, I don't have to check up on him constantly, I just know that when I really need to get something through, he's working on it on his end."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Okay, I'll try to pick my most tame pet to carry it over."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "I can't share those notes. It's private. I'm sure your Imperator has you do things that you can't always discuss even with your friends."
<Theresa> "It's understandable."
<DanteE> "Yeah, but ... it's _Entropy_.
<Ftisk> "Yes I've teust levels ring"
<Ftisk> trust even
<Theresa> *whispers* "Dante, you're not going to try to strongarm stuff out of him!"
<DanteE> to T: "Trying to appeal to our ... let's say mutual respect of Lord E."

  • Ftisk interested/storing for further in the strong human interaction between Dante Shadows amd Theresa...

<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Okay, I'll send a courier over in a little while. I'm not sure what I'll send, but you'll know it when you see it."
<DanteE> "I can imagine. Thanks, Shadows."
<Theresa> *whisper* "Respect is one thing, but you're basically asking him to betray stuff that his Imperator wants to keep private!"
<Theresa> (Imperator > the War > yourself. )
<DanteE> "The way I see it, if we come up with a better understanding of the enemy and the universe, it'd be worth it."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Is there anything else? I need to start picking and training a 'pigeon' if you want it ready soon."
<DanteE> (You guys got anything?)
<Theresa> (Nah, I'm good.)

  • Ftisk weave a eyestalk: bye shadows!

<DanteE> "I think that will do. And we'll keep whatever you send under wraps as much as we can."
<Ftisk> (IPAC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers )
<Random_Nerd> (Heh, you were thinking of that too?)
<Ftisk> (yesss Ip and pigeon in to short distance....)
<Ftisk> (hey distance can know something on the wall?)
<Random_Nerd> (Hmm?)
<Ftisk> (maybe is another game... I remembered that shadow and eclipse have a brother that is distance...)
<DanteE> (does the term "distance to the wall" even mean anything?)
<Ftisk> (definitely Distance is in another Nobilis game... sorry)
<Random_Nerd> (Not in prosaic terms. Well, in prosaic distance, it's outside the known universe. But in the Spirit World, it's reasonably close.)\
<Random_Nerd> (But if you tried to fly there in a spaceship, even with FTL, you'd be advised to start a few thousand years ago.)
<Theresa> (Maybe someone did.  :) )
<Ftisk> ((Never underestimate Noble crazynesssssss)
<Random_Nerd> (True.)
<Random_Nerd> (But the things that Shadows calls and sends can get in and out pretty quickly. Really, he selects for that, because he doesn't want to spend years waiting for his new pet to arrive.)
<DanteE> "Whatever he sends doesn't leave this floor of the tower, agreed?"
<Theresa> "Agreed."
<Ftisk> "agreed"
<Random_Nerd> (So, shall we cut to when his courier arrives?)
<DanteE> (Hold on...)
<DanteE> "Anyone else think of what we can do to figure out the Big Question?"
<Ftisk> (witch one of the big questions)
<DanteE> (The one Entropy gave us)
<Ftisk> (the council one? Or the Kudzu ono?))
<Random_Nerd> (I know, the "Can I Have A Sandwich?" one!)
<DanteE> (Which automatically makes it Big)
<Theresa> (No, dear, you already ate.)
<Random_Nerd> (Question answered!)
<Theresa> "The Meaning of Life is written somewhere."
<DanteE> "I've seen the movie."
<DanteE> (Are our aides here?)
<Theresa> (They weren't in the room, I think.)
<Random_Nerd> (William's in the building, Samuel's at the University.)
<DanteE> "OK. We'll approach this scientifically.
<DanteE> "Hypothesis: coming through the Wall affects memory, mainly by putting big holes in it."
<Theresa> "It being the memory or the Wall?"
<DanteE> "Memory. But recent events would seem to indicate holes in the wall, as well.
<Random_Nerd> (oh, and hey, a clip of what I was drawing on for the this-game version of HS.)
<Ftisk> "This lead to the question: What changed the wall's acting behavior?"
<Random_Nerd> (A??nupriya Mageshkumar?? wore the name Kadir-Rahman in the Lands Be-??
<Random_Nerd> yond Creation and thought this name an aspect of herself. She fed that??
<Random_Nerd> aspectÂ’s strength with her efforts and occult bargains, seeking always to??
<Random_Nerd> make it greater. Then one day she awoke to understand that Kadir-Rah-??
<Random_Nerd> man was not her aspect but the converse; that she had been a part of Kadir-??
<Random_Nerd> Rahman since the day of her birth, and upon her death would rejoin with??
<Random_Nerd> it. “Which came first?” she asked herself. “My creation of Kadir-Rahman,??
<Random_Nerd> or Kadir-Rahman’s creation of Anupriya Mageshkumar?” Eventually, she??
<Random_Nerd> concluded that the question had no meaning; time is an artifact of the an-??
<Random_Nerd> gels, and cannot bind such things as Kadir-Rahman, who is also named the??
<Random_Nerd> Mercy at the Heart of the Flame.??)
<DanteE> (Where's that from?)
<Theresa> "Maybe that is part of the makeup of the Wall. To get through it is to lose part of yourself."
<Random_Nerd> (Page 34, Unlikely Flowerings.)
<Ftisk> "And these parts are lost or stored somewhere?"
<Ftisk> "If stored somewhere one can contact these?"
<Random_Nerd> (Now isn't that an interesting question?)
<DanteE> "... you think the memory fragment we got is a tiny piece of Kudzu?"
<Theresa> "If stored...hmm...that would be interesting. If you go one way, say into the Outside and then come back, do you get those same memories back, like James? And in return lose memories from the side you were on?"
<DanteE> "How much did James remember, though?"
<Ftisk> "Yes... I think that these pieces are from kudzu"
<Random_Nerd> (Do any of you have Aspect 3?)
<DanteE> (Yo)
<DanteE> (And Theresa too, I think)
<Theresa> (Ditto.)
<DanteE> (Can I 'think back' and get a sense of who 'I' was when I wanted that crown?"
<DanteE> )
<Random_Nerd> (Thinking back provides no additional information. It seems that whoever "you" were when you felt it, you weren't thinking about yourself at that moment.)
<Random_Nerd> (Okay, on the wall opposite the screen, you start to see little dark spots starting to form the shape of a circle.)
<DanteE> (Then what did I want a crown for? What did it symbolize?)
<Random_Nerd> (It symbolized an achievement that very few of your peers had managed.)
<DanteE> (... which was?)
<Random_Nerd> (Being able and worthy to have such a crown.)
<Random_Nerd> (The circle thing looks like... okay, you know the "chaos game" way of generating fractals?)
<Theresa> "I hope that's Shadow's pigeon. If we have hyperactive mold, I'm going to have to go get the bleach."
<Theresa> (Yes.)
<DanteE> (Can't say I do)
<Random_Nerd> (Okay, look at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Sierpinski_chaos_animated.gif)
<Ftisk> (no but is not important)
<DanteE> "That was quick."
<Random_Nerd> (It looks like that, with "random" dots starting to appear, but filling into the shape of a two-dimensional picture of an open mouth with lots of fangs.)
<DanteE> "Assuming..."

  • Ftisk is very interested

<Random_Nerd> The image on the wall finishes filling in. It looks like... okay, rather like the portals in Portal. Like there was suddenly a hole in the wall that was entirely occupied by a creature that looks vaguely like a very small version of the Sarlac from Return Of The Jedi.
<Ftisk> (the picture is animated?)
<Theresa> (You have to wait for a bit for the flecks to change.)
<Random_Nerd> It's roughly cone-shaped, and as fills in, you see the barbs on the interior rippling.
<DanteE> "Hello?"
<Random_Nerd> It makes a coughing sound.
<Random_Nerd> Then it coughs up a flashdrive in a ziplock bag.
<Ftisk> (slime dodge!)
<DanteE> "Well, there goes my pizza-delivery idea..."
<Theresa> "Huh. Glad it wasn't a floppy."
<Theresa> "Thank you, little sarlac-delivery-mouth."
<Random_Nerd> It stays there in the wall, and its internal barbs ripple.
<Ftisk> me take the bag

  • Ftisk take the bag

<DanteE> "This is his tamest pet?"

  • Ftisk open it with the manipulators

<Ftisk> "Never judge one from apparence..."
<Random_Nerd> The bag is curiously dry, rather than being covered in viscous fluid or anything like that. Rather, it has what seems like an exceedingly fine dust coating it.
<Theresa> (Do we have any computer in the office available?)
<Random_Nerd> (Great, now I'm wondering if Ftisk's snail-shape has a USB port.)
<Ftisk> (I can read it!)
<Theresa> "Make sure that we're not connected to a network, just in case."
<Random_Nerd> (Let's say that there's a cabinet with several laptops in it.)
<DanteE> (Ftisk doesn't _need_ a USB port)
<Theresa> (I would love it if Ftisk had a port.)
<Ftisk> (I have data domain)
<Theresa> (But can Ftisk print?)

  • Ftisk body open an appropriare connection port

<Random_Nerd> (True. You can read it with a lesser divination, and display it with a ghost miracle.)

  • DanteE writes a note: "Thanks again, Shadows. We may soon be able to work out a way you can directly communicate with your counterpart. Still looking into what Entropy asked of us. Talk to you soon. --Dante"

<Ftisk> (ldiv on the drive + redirect info on the display)

  • DanteE stuffs the note into a Red Edelweiss and tosses it into the mouth.

<Random_Nerd> Okay, it's basically a bunch of HTML files, with one named READMEFIRST
<Random_Nerd> Other than that, they seem to be mostly... occult HOWTOs, really.
<Ftisk> "ok let's open the readmefirst file"
<Theresa> ("Do not feed the mouth! Will explode!")
<Ftisk> (not feeed it *after* midnight!)
<Theresa> (Bah, where are his programmer genes? ReadMe files are for wimps and debuggers!)
<Ftisk> (Ftisk is a costruct and do things in logical way ... mostly)
<Random_Nerd> It says "Hey, guys, this is everything I had on hand that I can tell you. It's basically what I put together when I was first starting to learn Summonings, trying to distill a bunch of old books and oral narratives into a more easily referred-to form. Anyway, the critter that sent this can convey your object back to me and then I can send it back."
<Random_Nerd> The creature ripples its fangs again, counterclockwise.
<DanteE> "Hey, William! Where's that paper you had earlier with the Active Writing?"\
<Theresa> "I have a sudden urge to get a fork..."
<Random_Nerd> William walks out for a moment, and then returns with a manilla folder carying the paper.
<Ftisk> "So the critter is a pigeon from outside... IPAC again)
<Ftisk> "Theresa, can you create an evelope for the folder?"
<Theresa> (What does Will think of our new wall decor?)
<Random_Nerd> (He hasn't noticed it yet.)
<Ftisk> (Theresa you can do lCre free right?)
<DanteE> "Can you recreate it? We can check and see if it works cross-dimensions."
<Theresa> (Of stuff in my domain, yes.)
<DanteE> nonchalant: "Oh... that's from Shadows over there."
<Random_Nerd> William: "Across dimensions?"
<Ftisk> (a biodegrarable mais oringin envelope?)
<Random_Nerd> William glances at the wall. Then he tries very hard not to jump in surprise. He hardly hops three inches, which under the circumstances is reasonably decent.
<Random_Nerd> William: "I get the feeling that this is one of those situations I don't really need to know the backstory behind."
<DanteE> (I should not laugh IC... :D )
<DanteE> "It's a carrier pigeon from outside Creation, sort of."
<Theresa> (Sure, I can do that.)
<Random_Nerd> William: "Oh. A pigeon. I should have guessed."
<Random_Nerd> William: "It looks like a garbage disposal and a shark had a baby."
<Theresa> "Much more lively than the pigeon circulatory system in Dante's office."
<Theresa> (But you'll have to ask for an envelope since Theresa can't read minds.  :) )
<Ftisk> "It's from outside the wall"
<DanteE> "What I was thinking is a test to see if Samuel's Active Writing would work in getting messages from here to Shadows.
<Ftisk> "Someone can make an envelope for the folder? Better to avoid it being delovered as dust"
<Random_Nerd> William: "Does... whoever you're going to be sending it to... read and write English and human mathematics?"
<Ftisk> delivered aven
<DanteE> "Shadows does, and that's the first step.
<DanteE> "After... dunno."

  • Theresa LCs a biodegradble envelope.

<Ftisk> "We have a theoty we need to test"
<Theresa> "Here's an envelope."
<Random_Nerd> William: "Okay, then. It might work. Normally, communications like this would have Estate problems, but you think that this one's out There, too?"

  • Ftisk take the folder from william's hand and put it inthe envelope

<DanteE> "We'll soon see. It's all one big experiment.
<Random_Nerd> William: "Fair enough. Anything else I can help with?"

  • DanteE writes on the envelope: "If we're right, we may be able to communicate via the 'Active Writing' that's just reappeared in Creation. We'll try to send a message soon."
  • DanteE pops his flower and earlier note in the envelope...

<DanteE> "Basically, set up your earlier experiment the same way, and we'll try it again in a few minutes."
<Ftisk> "Someothers want to put other in the envelope?"

  • DanteE idly wonders if we should add some meat or Mandalorian armor...

<Theresa> "Nah, I don't have anything I want to send to Shadows."

  • Ftisk close the envelope and put it in the "pigeon"

<Ftisk> "good travel"
<Random_Nerd> The "pigeon" swallows it with a sound rather like throwing up, backwards, if your jaw and throat were made of stone and rusty metal.
<Random_Nerd> William winces.
<Random_Nerd> Then little specks of the 'pigeon' start disappearing, and the ones that you can see look as though it were pulling itself farther back 'into' the wall.
<DanteE> (Lie back and think of the XP, William... :) )
<Random_Nerd> (Oh, and bear in mind that it looked quite deeper than the thickness of the wall.)
<Random_Nerd> (So, really, it looks like it's two feet through the wall and going farther, only you can see it through the wall and the people on the other side can't.)
<Random_Nerd> It continues to fade/recede until not a speck is visible.
<DanteE> "Give him a few minutes to receive that... figure he's waiting for it...
<Random_Nerd> William: "Do I need to start watching the corners for Hounds of Tindalos now?"
<DanteE> "No, don't be silly. If there were Hounds you shouldn't look anywhere near the corners."
<Theresa> "I wonder if we could get Colors from Space..."
<Theresa> "Is the Imperator of Colors a Wildlord?"
<Random_Nerd> William: "I don'
<Random_Nerd> t think there is such an Imperator."
<Random_Nerd> William: "But there's an Angel of Light."
<DanteE> "And we've met Physics. Is there a separate Optics?"
<Random_Nerd> WIlliam: "Not that I know of."
<DanteE> "OK, how long do you figure it'll take for Shadows to read the notes?
<Random_Nerd> (Oh, and a side note, while I'm thinking about it. The guide to Summoning that Shadows sent you is enough, if you want to, to start spending character points on buying HSNPs, and later HS points.)
<Theresa> "Depends on if he's also busy working."
<Ftisk> (HSNP? what is? a new attribute)
<Random_Nerd> (High Summoning Miracle Point. If you want to start developing a rating in High Summonings, and you don't have a Chancel with that quality, you need to buy 5 HSMPs to be able to start buying HS rating.)
<DanteE> (Oh.. Theresa can Div if the envelope's been opened)
<DanteE> (Obviously Tpyo has about 15 of the things.)
<Random_Nerd> (Nobles from chancels with HS, like Shadows, can learn it without that, and can spend Spirit MPs on summoning miracles.)
<Random_Nerd> (Oh, and human beings from such chancels can learn it in rare cases, although they can't get the MPs.)
<Theresa> (Sure, I'll LDiv the envelope, please.)
<Ftisk> (good idea DanteE)
<DanteE> (Come to think of it, we have more than enough points to tweak Kudzu and/or Amyra, right?)
<Random_Nerd> (Using any Penetration?)
<Random_Nerd> (To tweak Kudzu a bit, yes. To tweak Amyra, you'd have to use CPs on that instead of on yourself.)
<Theresa> (For an envel....oh, yeah. If he's holding it, it's in Auctoritas...)
<Theresa> (Sure, use 2 Pen.)
<Random_Nerd> (The envelope is currently in the gullet of the summoned creature. It is in Locus Barakiel at the moment, and Shadows is standing right by it and performing a ritual to send it back over There.)
<Random_Nerd> (Oh, and it's unopened.)
<Theresa> "The envelope is currently in transit elsewhere. Please wait while the postcarrier picks his teeth..."
<Random_Nerd> (Of course, it also shows that the pigeon is really fast. He got from in Amyra to Locus Barakiel in under five minutes.)
<Random_Nerd> (In mechanical terms, it has Gatemaker and a couple other relevant Gifts.)
<DanteE> (Wait, where's he sending it?)
<Ftisk> (I think here... again)
<Random_Nerd> (The idea was for you to give him an item to send to the other him.)
<Random_Nerd> (That's how he understood the conversation, at least.)
<DanteE> (Whoops, we have stuff in there for _him_)
<Random_Nerd> (He doesn't know that. Might want to call him up and tell him.)
<Ftisk> (Well the envelope with the writing on it will work... Theresa are you the only one that know this missundestunding)

  • DanteE eeps, and hits redial on the cosmic phone...

<DanteE> (Urk, Ftisk's right, Theresa's the only one who knows IC)
<Theresa> "We wanted Shadows to open the envelope, right? He's sending it through the Wall..."
<DanteE> "He is? Whoops!"

  • DanteE hits redial on the cosmic phone...

<Random_Nerd> Wasp Thingy: "You have made a prayer to the Dominus of Shadows. He's busy, so if this is not an emergency..."
<DanteE> "Tell him don't send that through the wall yet!"
<Ftisk> (we need a red phone like the cool war one -> direct line with shadow)
<Ftisk> (cold even)
<DanteE> (We have one, his flower.)
<Random_Nerd> Wasp: "Who is this speaking?"

  • Ftisk ask william for shadow flower

<DanteE> "Courage! Tell him that now!"
<Random_Nerd> Wasp: "Tranferring your call. Please wait."

  • Ftisk to will: nevermind.. thaks

<Random_Nerd> The wasp hums a sillibant insectoid music version of Hungry Like The Wolf.
<Theresa> (Shadows needs to get better taste in receptionists...)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Hey. What is it?"
<DanteE> "Don't send that through yet, that's for you, not him."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Shit. Sorry. No, stay, boy! Stay!"
<DanteE> (This is either a silly mixup or massive screwage incoming...)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "So, what did you want me to send across, then?"
<DanteE> "Nothing yet. First we want to check if the new communication method works from here to you...
<DanteE> "If it does, then we can use it to talk to him."
<Ftisk> "we hope"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Okay, let me see, how does this work?"
<DanteE> "So far we only sent a weak signal within Amyra."
<DanteE> "William?"
<Random_Nerd> William: "I don't think it'll work sending to... wasn't he on Jupiter? Or Hell? Or possibly both?"
<Random_Nerd> William: "But I don't really know how this works."
<DanteE> "That's the point of the experiment."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Okay, I'm looking at the weird paper. What do I do now?"
<DanteE> "William, you prepped it, right?"
<Random_Nerd> William: "Yes. All the 'netcode' should be there. Tell him to look at it, try to hold the concepts in his mind in turn as he goes across the page, left to right and then up to down."
<DanteE> "OK, then...

  • DanteE calls up Samuel on the conf room phone.

<Random_Nerd> Samuel: "Jose Cuervo's House of Waffles, may I take your order?"
<Random_Nerd> William facepalms.
<DanteE> "Samuel, ready to do anothe rtest of that active writing?"
<Random_Nerd> Samuel: "Uh, yeah. What do you want me to do?"
<DanteE> "One sec...
<DanteE> "Shadows, if we're right, you might see something on that paper in a minute. Then again, you might just see it go blank..."
<DanteE> "Samuel. Send 'This is a test' to the same paper as before."
<Theresa> (Why do I see Sam writing dirty limericks in Dionyse in my head?)
<Ftisk> (because is reasonable...)
<Random_Nerd> (Limericks are an Earth-only estate.)
<DanteE> (What do you think 'This is a test' means in Dionyl? :) )
<Random_Nerd> (You do not want to meet the True God that has them as one of his Estates.)
<Ftisk> (lol!)
<Theresa> (Because we are the only ones with a Nantucket?)
<Random_Nerd> Samuel: "Okay, working on it. Give me a moment to go through the startup."
<DanteE> (I did tell you guys a version of the 'Yo9ung Man from Nantucket' limerick, right?)
<Random_Nerd> Samuel: "And, go. Did it work?"
<DanteE> "Shadows?"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "These are exams of one?"
<DanteE> "... you see something?"
<Ftisk> (something arrived! Yatta!)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Yeah. What I said. Did you guys build a better Babelfish or something?"
<Theresa> "We have a Dionyl writing on the other end."
<DanteE> "That means this method can communicate inter-dimensionally...
<Theresa> "It was supposed to be 'this is a test.'"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Huh."
<DanteE> "Well, once we refine it some."
<Ftisk> ("using an excrucian estate")
<DanteE> "Which _may_ mean we'll be able to use it to communicate across the Wall."
<Random_Nerd> (I think we should call it a night soon.)
<Ftisk> (ok)
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "That would be really handy to me if you had a way of doing that."
<Ftisk> "we are working on it"
<DanteE> "That is from an Estate that was Excruciated, but reappeared at the same time Sakharoth did."
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "So, you think it's in here, but also out there?"
<DanteE> "Which is big news no matter how you look at it."
<Ftisk> "I think, sam can use my help with the technical side of this writing"
<Random_Nerd> Shadows: "Could you please send me copies of everything you know about this?"
<DanteE> "If it actually was Excruciated, yeah."
<DanteE> "We're still working on it, but once we have enough to put together a report, you'll get the first copy."
<Random_Nerd> (And yes, you can. Domain miracles of Data can easily find a lot more information than Sam and his students have been able to figure out.)
<Ftisk> "i can help Sam improve the process"
<DanteE> (Now we just need to figure out how to ease the students into having a snail as their guest lecturer... :D )
<Ftisk> (or a humanoid bunch of junk)
<Theresa> (Preservation of Sanity is against the Code, right?  :) )
<Ftisk> (let's only the sturdy survive! !___!)
<DanteE> (Sanity is a crutch.)
<Ftisk> (wild chancel...)
<Ftisk> (&imperatot!)
<Random_Nerd> ____________STOP_______________
=-= Theresa is now known as BethE
<Ftisk> nice session!
=-= DanteE is now known as Knockwood
=-= YOU are now known as Angelo_Pampalone
<Knockwood> That went in an odd direction. :)
<BethE> *ooze* Liked the messenger, dear.
<Angelo_Pampalone> really neat!
<Knockwood> You guys get the implications of this, right?
<Angelo_Pampalone> no,.... wich ones?
<Knockwood> Well, like I said, we may be able to communicate through the wall.
<Angelo_Pampalone> we haven't test this yet
<Angelo_Pampalone> but ftisk will work with sam to perfect the process
<Knockwood> Which means we can do a direct experiment of the Amnesia Hypothesis...
<BethE> But who gets to be the guinea pig?
<Angelo_Pampalone> me?
<Knockwood> Alt-Shadows: "What do you remember?" Random bug: "Oh, well, blah blah blah blah." Alt-S: "OK, now head through here." )Foop!( Shadows: "Hi, what do you remember?" Bug: "uhhhhhhh..."
<Angelo_Pampalone> ftisk is _curious_
<Random_Nerd> Oh, and part of why it worked better than William expected is that there was a Noble on the other end. Active Writing basically runs off the attention of the person reading it, and a Noble has a lot more of that on hand than an average guy.
<Knockwood> ah.
<Angelo_Pampalone> uhm
<BethE> I had forgotten that it babelfished.
<Knockwood> Alternatively we can do the direct approach: "Hi, Alt-Shadows. What's happening over there?" A-S: "Well, Ashlee Simpson just got her 5th Doctorate..." Us: ::boggle::
<Random_Nerd> You will discover that the /real/ reason that Excrucians carry razor-sharp swords is to shave off their goatees when they come through.
<Angelo_Pampalone> so now you are all in dst right?
<Random_Nerd> And that Evil Goatee Kudzu is an irritable elementary-school teacher.
<Knockwood> in the US, yeah.
<Random_Nerd> Yeah. Will be for months. Will this time work for you?
<Angelo_Pampalone> so 1hour first

  • BethE glares at RN> He's moving in on Theresa's territory!

<Angelo_Pampalone> now is 5.38
<Knockwood> so the game wwas supposed to start 3 hrs 9 minutes ago.
<Angelo_Pampalone> ok
<Knockwood> which I guess means 2:30 your time
<Knockwood> Then we do this dance again when you go to DST in a month?
<Angelo_Pampalone> yes one hour before the last seession's start
<Angelo_Pampalone> yes.. in a month more o less
<Angelo_Pampalone> now is better for me -> I can sleep 1h after the game :-)
<Random_Nerd> Ah, I wasn't sure if you had DST over on that side of the world.
<Angelo_Pampalone> each and every year the politics talk to abbandon time shif but never madea decison
<Knockwood> (He mentioned it earlier)
<Knockwood> I sent them this link earlier: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/861/what-are-we-trying-to-accomplish-with-daylight-saving-time-anyway
<Random_Nerd> Oh, and Dante, clever idea about using the new estate to communicate.
<Random_Nerd> I hadn't realized that implication of it before you mentioned it, but the logic is sound.
<Knockwood> basically, they're trying to sync the times people are awake with the time the sun is up so we burn less energy with lighting
<Knockwood> Why, thank ya, RN. (I stumped the Hollyhock God! Muahhahhah!)
<Random_Nerd> Oh, you guys come up with stuff I don't expect all the time.
<Random_Nerd> Rule Zero Prime, basically.
<Angelo_Pampalone> this is the uncertaion of the game
<Knockwood> (The fun part is, I think I came up with it on the fly, but rushed its application because Shadows was expecting something back)
<Angelo_Pampalone> news from lazarus?
<BethE> Not yet.
<Knockwood> Like I said, I think I saw a post from him on the fora earlier
<Angelo_Pampalone> and brand? we lost he before we gain he?
<Knockwood> Rand Brittain never got back to RN...
<Angelo_Pampalone> oh...
<BethE> Well, I'm going to go to bed, guys.  :) Good game and see you next week!
<Random_Nerd> I'll see about getting back in touch with him, see what's up.
<Random_Nerd> But see you next week, at any rate.
<Knockwood> next week, all!
<Angelo_Pampalone> bye!
|<-- BethE has left irc2.magicstar.net (Disintegrated: All shall love me and despair?)
<Knockwood> (Come to think of it, does AW have a Noble? :)
<Angelo_Pampalone> AW?
<Knockwood> (Active Writing)
<Angelo_Pampalone> ALienWare?
<Angelo_Pampalone> doh!
<Random_Nerd> It does not.
<Angelo_Pampalone> and the other sakahr/suebi estates?
<Knockwood> something to think about. :)
<Knockwood> (Oh, good catch Angelo!)
<Random_Nerd> Sakaroth, if the guy you met is him, has no Nobles. Of course, he could make new ones if he took the time to enchancel, but it will take time if he does.
<Random_Nerd> Of course, if he's actually Suebi, then he may have Shards.
<Random_Nerd> And, of course, there is precedent for Excrucians to have Nobles, and (in this game, at least) for Imperators to have Shards.
<Angelo_Pampalone> you witre my exception
<Angelo_Pampalone> write
<Angelo_Pampalone> 'uhm... I feel it's suebi and not Sakh... but I feel the same or Kudzu at some point
<Angelo_Pampalone> Nobilis: the game without certain facts! is a good title for the next edition?
<Knockwood> Might actually be better... if we can get an Excrucian Estate going on this side of the Wall
<Angelo_Pampalone> are we cross pollinationg with excru already?
<Angelo_Pampalone> I mean the wild lords maybe they are all ex excru
<Knockwood> true, that's all part of Official Nobilis Canon Doubt & uncertaiunty
<Angelo_Pampalone> yeah
<Random_Nerd> In this game, though, there is an answer to that question, and I imagine that you'll find it out sooner or later.
<Angelo_Pampalone> ohh
<Knockwood> (Once we get a link, we'll need to ask 'Who was Kudzu')
<Angelo_Pampalone> We are going in that direction with this experiment!
<Angelo_Pampalone> Kudzu... Now is 505 -50% in my rating... someone want to bet?
<Angelo_Pampalone> ehm 50-50
<Knockwood> well, reality is malleable in an RPG, remember. :)
<Angelo_Pampalone> true
<Angelo_Pampalone> but wehn we nail a fact that fact remain the same
<Angelo_Pampalone> if we know that the estate AW is from a mimic then we know we have meet suebi not sakh
<Knockwood> hm... that's right, we'd need to check what it was like before it was Exd
<Random_Nerd> Of course, if he was a mimic, it wouldn't work this way.
<Angelo_Pampalone> we change time 4 marzo 2009
<Random_Nerd> He'd lack the estate, and instead have low ratings in other related estates. So, no AW, but Writing, Networks, and Programming, say.
<Knockwood> so, he's not a mimic
<Knockwood> Marzo? March or May?
<Angelo_Pampalone> yes was a cut and paste march
<Knockwood> that was a week ago
<Random_Nerd> Or, at least, if he's a mimic, then there's something else weird going on. So, it's a theory, but not a strongly supported one.
<Angelo_Pampalone> wait a moment...
<Angelo_Pampalone> that was the news date... the right one is 29/03/2009
<Knockwood> oh, end of this month
<Angelo_Pampalone> then 25/10/2009 we change back
<Angelo_Pampalone> and in usa?
<Knockwood> here we go... we change back first sunday in November
<Random_Nerd> That sounds right.
<Random_Nerd> Anyway, I need to get offline and go to bed.
<Random_Nerd> Good session, guys.
<Angelo_Pampalone> good night!
<Knockwood> g'night RN
<Knockwood> you too Angelo
<Angelo_Pampalone> I leave too
