[Angelo] well the panel is nice
[Lazarus] once the iPad gets multitasking (OS 4.2 for iPad is in beta, to be released in November, which HAS multitasking, grr!), then things like IRC will be much more usable.
[BethE] We do not have a cat for Eric to pet when he is GMing. He sticks with just steepling his hands and saying "Interesting..."

[Random_Nerd] So, at the end of last session, you'd gotten permission from Kudzu to open portals to alien and inimical realms in the mysterious basement of the Library.

[DanteE] (Uh, I was thinking open the portal someplace far away while observing the library basement)
[Brian] (I know. Brian figured, though, that it would be a great place for a lab!)

[Random_Nerd] Brian specifically asked Kudzu about putting in a Summonings lab there.
[DanteE] (How far away is it from downtown Kaerkoven?)
[Random_Nerd] (It's on the outskirts of town, so, say, fifteen minutes' drive, traffic permitting?)
[Brian] (but it's in the Grove)
[Brian] (which had some protections on it of some flavour or other)

[Theresa] (Mine! You'll corrupt my Maple and...okay, the acorn may already be too far gone...)

[Brian] (We've been in the library before, Kwd, and we bumped into it close to our first time in the grove, is my recollection of events)

[DanteE] So, first step is to look over the basement...
[Brian] (in other news, new tv = resetting lip synch delay on picture vs sound. Otherwise it really irritates me. Went down from 120 ms to 10...)
[Ftisk] Let's Ftisk do this!
[Random_Nerd] Visually, the Basement looks pretty much like the upper part, except a little darker.
[Random_Nerd] There's a maze of twisting tunnels, all alike.
[Random_Nerd] The walls are made of stone, terracotta, that sort of thing.
[Ftisk] (and wind with odd sounds?)
[DanteE] (I'll go pwn the grue)
[Random_Nerd] And the occasional breeze from the surface blows through.
[Random_Nerd] But unlike the Whispering Library above, the shape of the tunnels and the paths of the breezes does /not/ combine to make any meaningful sounds.
[Random_Nerd] So, it seems rather a waste.
[Random_Nerd] Yet, that's how it is.
[Brian] (which makes it great for making a lab, yes?)
[Theresa] (Well, that's good. Just what we need, having someone whispering to us in someplace creepy...)
[DanteE] "Let's see, what did Kudzu say when he created the place?"
[Ftisk] "uhm, But if we expand the tunnels what will happen to Kudzu mind?"
[DanteE] (and when exactly did the basement appear?)
[Random_Nerd] (Around when Kudzu showed up again.)
[DanteE] "That's what I wonder."
[Brian] "Kudzu specifically said that he doesn't believe that the basement has any connection with his mind."
[Theresa] "I'm not sure whether this is a direct change equals effect thing with his brain...I hope not."
[Theresa] (The basement has probably always been there.)
[Random_Nerd] (No it hasn't.)
[Theresa] (Ah. I am wrong then. ^^ )
[DanteE] "And yet it spontaneously expanded when Kudzu was 'remembering his dream', sort of...
[Ftisk] "Nice an auto expanding lab!"
[DanteE] "The same time there were known breaches... the attack on Jaris, the reappearance of Sakharoth."
[Theresa] "If this is a representation of his memories, maybe he created the basement for that which he has lost."
[Random_Nerd] Brian, you've found a large room that could make a decent lab, if you took the time to furnish it and so forth.
[DanteE] "There is still something keeping people away... if we set up your lab nearby rather than here and watched this place when you do the actual connection we may get something."
[Brian] "Well, the Boss said go ahead. If it starts changing him, then, well, we'll stop. Anyway, here's a great lab spot!"
[Brian] "Roomy, spacious, all that jazz"
[Ftisk] "Well, I trust Kudzu judgment (because he gave me DanteE) and you, his son not?"
[DanteE] (Did we call Shadows yet?)
[Theresa] "I think it's just our tendency to overthink things, Ftisk."
[Ftisk] (yep we call Shadows last session asking him to came here)
[Theresa] (Yes. He said he'd be here in a 1/2 hour or so.)
[Brian] (We did. He said to set up the lab first. I /think/ we said "come along and the lab will be set up when you get here.")
[Ftisk] (ok, Ftisk can crate all the machinary needed ^_^ )
[Brian] "So, do we get people to bring us the supplies ... ah, let me just make a call ..."
[Brian] (Brian will phone up the Amyra Ikea and order a table, a desk, some chairs, all that kind of stuff)
[DanteE] (Is he bringing the magic paper?)
[Random_Nerd] Theresa, your cellphone rings. Why do you have cellphone reception underground in a possibly magical cavern thing? Because you're a noble, dammit.
[Theresa] (You're setting up your lab with Ikea? You _want_ it to be evil from the start?)

[Brian] (setting up with Ikea because it's better to kill Ikea tables than nice ancient rosewood tables)

[Brian] (though the latter are more thaumatologically active...)
[Ftisk] (I mean the phone is someone asking for a survey?)
[Theresa] (I thought any paper can be used for Active Writing.)
[Random_Nerd] William: "I just wanted to let you know that my fiancee will be moving into Amyra later today. I believe you'd said you wanted to meet her?"
[Random_Nerd] (Shadows doesn't know anything about Active Writing other than what you guys told him.)
[Ftisk] (YEP!)
[DanteE] (Yeah, but we left the paper we managed to communicate through with him)
[Random_Nerd] (Yeah, but you could just make another one.)

• Theresa smiles. "Oh! How nice! Yes, I would like to meet her, William. What would be a good time for the two of you? We're going to be opening portals to Outside once Shadows gets here in...about a half hour or so."
  

[Theresa] (At this point, William thinks about asking his girl not to come for another couple of days...)
[DanteE] "Odd timing on her part..."
[Ftisk] (here is _always_ an odd timing)
[Random_Nerd] William: "Just to be clear, you're doing that a long way away from central Kaerkoven, right?"
[Brian] (from /central/ Kaerkoven? Yep!)
[Brian] (just so long as we don't have to /define/ "a long way")
[Theresa] "You know where the Whispering Library is, correct?"
[Random_Nerd] William: "Near the Grove?"
[Theresa] "Indeed. We're in the basement."
[DanteE] (You –REDACTED-, got a contingency plan in case things go to hell?)
[Theresa] (Yes. Aspect 3.)
[Brian] (contingency plan?)
[Brian] (that's just not fun!)
[Ftisk] (who need contingency plans!?!?!?!)
[Random_Nerd] William pauses for a moment.
[Random_Nerd] William: "Okay, fair enough. See you in a couple hours?"
[Brian] (... I hadn't thought of it, really. So much different stuff can go wrong, it seems unnecessary to plan for it)
[Theresa] (William took the Aides class on 'Count to ten before freaking out at what a Noble said', didn't he?)
[Ftisk] (Ftisk _never_ will think of a c. plan!)
[DanteE] (Brian, you may have just come up with a PC's Commandment there. :) )
[Theresa] "Thank you, William. Feel free to let me know where you would like to meet, whether public or private. And feel free to stop by the Conservatory for flowers for when you greet her. Oh and you might want to notify Lesson on the possibility of problems if something goes wrong with the portals."
[Random_Nerd] William: "I'll tell him to have his guys ready in case there's trouble."
[Theresa] "Thank you. See you in a few hours and if we're running late with horrors, I'll let you know so that you and your fiancee won't be waiting on me."
[DanteE] "Is Sam putting together a new Active Writing Communication Paper Pair?"
[Random_Nerd] William: "No. He's helping choose the drapes. Want me to tell him to do that instead?"
[Theresa] (We have drapes? Or drapes for the place the fiancee is staying at?)
[Random_Nerd] (Well, William /doesn't/ have drapes.)
[Random_Nerd] (That's why Sam's there.)
[DanteE] "Ah, yes. We'll be trying communication again in a few minutes. Then again, he may have already been putting it together..."
[Theresa] (Yeesh, they are almost married, aren't they? ^^ )
[Random_Nerd] William: "Gimme a moment..."
[Random_Nerd] William: "Oh. Right. They're in the binder. I'll have someone send them over."

• DanteE tries to determine where he can stick the paper so it doesn't get shredded...
  

[Random_Nerd] Shadows pulls a small notebook from his vague-looking pocket, and writes some things down.
[Random_Nerd] He hands the paper to Brian.

• Brian will read the paper ...
  

[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "There. Words and gestures of permission to open a pathway, drawn from your own status as a ruler of this place. And on the other side, words of the denial of that permission."
[Brian] "Ah, neat."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "You don't have to /say/ them, although it may help. But /think/ them, they will make a particular shape in your mind."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "And that shape will help pull apart a small gateway."
[Ftisk] "Its like a ‘we can do the rave here?’ permission?"
[DanteE] "So, if something comes through and tries to eat us, read side 2 fast?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "If something comes through that you weren't expecting, Brian reads side 2 and you try to think up something clever to do."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "And if it's an Excrucian, we trigger the bomb and run to a defensible location."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Ready?"

• DanteE looks to the others...

[Random_Nerd] Shadows pulls out a wand of his own from the bag. This one has a larger and more oddly shaped hook on the end.

• Theresa takes a deep breath, then nods.
  

[Random_Nerd] He polishes his crown, which still looks photoshopped.

• DanteE takes position where he can see both the summoning and the rest of the basement...
  

[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Brian, you start with the permission, and then I'll release the creature back to the Outside."

• Brian will gesture emphatically while thinking the pattern of the words of the permission
  

[DanteE] (Dollp has the paper, right?)
[Ftisk] (yep)
[Random_Nerd] The shadows in the room deepen, and then they all seem to turn at right angles, standing straight up from the floor instead of lying along it.
[Theresa] (Atten-tion!)
[Brian] (brb)
[Ftisk] (cliffhanger?)
[Random_Nerd] Shadows squints and carefully angles his hooked wand at Dollphaniel, and the shadows turn again, facing you edge-on, and making the whole room look oddly bright.
[Ftisk] dollp: grind gears sound
[Random_Nerd] Dollphaniel contracts tightly, and then expands out again.
[Random_Nerd] Then the note seems to vanish from her chest-cavity, and she drops several inches to the floor, like an inanimate piece of metal.

[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Okay, I'll hold this for a few minutes, and you do whatever you were going to do."
[Theresa] (Makes sense. He said that he just brought over the animating spirit.)
[Ftisk] "What happen?"
[DanteE] "Ftisk, what's Dollphaniel doing?"
[Ftisk] "oh, wait, I check "

[Random_Nerd] (Remember, Shadows didn't bring across a creature from Outside that happened to look like a very small Ophaniel. He brought over a creature that inhabited Ftisk's existing inanimate miniature Ophaniel.)

[Random_Nerd] Also, you recall that your name is Conrad. You're surrounded by enemies, and you're unarmed, but they don't seem to be ready to fight you.
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "He /what/?"
[Brian] "Yeah."
[DanteE] "Yeah, we really shoulda mentioned that..."
[Brian] "Should we be stopping this now?"
[Theresa] "He defeated a Warmain and tempered him...Conrad, I think it was."

• Ftisk lCreation a steel cage around all the enemies
  

[DanteE] to Ftisk: "Conrad?"
[Random_Nerd] Dante, it occurs to you that you never /did/ get that crown. You did everything to earn it, too.

[Ftisk] first I use a lesser Creation of a 18wheel truck at full speed against Brian to gain cover then change back to dragon form
[DanteE] (Ftisk, we're in a basement!)
[Random_Nerd] The easel does not say anything. There doesn't seem to be anyone on the other end using it.
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Okay, I'm ending this."
[DanteE] "Wait, Shadows...
[Ftisk] (wtf if there is enough room I create it anyway)
[Random_Nerd] He turns the wand again, and the shadows stand up from the ground.

[Random_Nerd] Theresa, you realize that something went wrong. The other people, the rich ones, took all your plants, and turned you into someone else.

[Random_Nerd] Brian, a high-speed truck smashes into your torso.

[Ftisk] "Why you stole my sword?"

[Brian] (Tempering causes his "essence" to blend with Ftisk's ... and I guess the passage opened up that side of the mix?)

[Brian] "Ftisk turned into the scrunchie he Tempered?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Because THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN."
[DanteE] (Yeah, but that means there's part of Conrad still extant on the other side.)
[Ftisk] "Dante declared his love to me, we do some weird sex, was so good I don't remember nothing"
[Brian] "Also, I had thoughts not-mine. Odd."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Oh, good. I always hoped you crazy kids would work it out."
[DanteE] "So did I. Something about a crown."
[Brian] "Shadows, do you know any other Wildlord Familia?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Not really well. Why?"
[DanteE] Any changes to the basement?
[Brian] "Because this is a neat experiment that bears repeating"
[Random_Nerd] Yes. There are a bunch of broken cages, and the rugs on the floor seem partially melted by hot silvery acid.
[Theresa] "I think..we have more data for the investigations. Apparently, if you temper a Warmain and then reconnect it to Outside...the Warmian personality emerges. Ticked."
[Random_Nerd] Oh, and Dollphaniel is still inanimate.
[DanteE] I mean the rest of the basement
[Theresa] "We shouldn't let our Dionyl friend Caesar do portals."
[DanteE] to Theresa: "Which may mean killing a Shard doesn't 'take'."
[Random_Nerd] Other than the damage caused by the brief fight, the basement seems unchanged.
[DanteE] "_Huge_ tactical problem..."

• DanteE gets William on the horn...
  

[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "What I don't get is... okay, so /all/ of you were having alien memories and the like?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "But I didn't get anything out of the ordinary."
[DanteE] "William, anything odder than usual happen in about the past minute?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "And I have a stronger connection to Out There than /anyone/ here."
[Brian] "Um, our Imperator was from Outside."
[Random_Nerd] William: "Oh, thank God. You guys have got to help me out here."

• Ftisk raise a manipulator "I tempered with a shard _I_'m more connected that you!"

[Random_Nerd] (Both of William's sentences are very quiet, so that if Dante didn't have Aspect, he couldn't hear them.)

[Theresa] (Or else Sam and Lisa are...either fighting or bonding incredibly or else Lisa is freaked out by Sam.)

[DanteE] "Ah... William! We should be meeting your fiancee, just to be polite.

• Theresa looks at Shadows. "Do you want something to drink? Strong?"

[DanteE] "10 Minutes? Certainly..."
[Random_Nerd] William: "See you then."
[DanteE] "Will do..."
[Random_Nerd] William hangs up.
[DanteE] to the others: "William sounded a little odd."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Okay, so am I getting the critter back?"
[Ftisk] "Oh my Dollphaniel, I can’t contact her outside..."
[DanteE] "Yeah. (If nothing else it'll get Ftisk off my leg...)
[Brian] "Um. Eventually, anyway... do that, tag along with us, or go home, as you will..."

• Ftisk try again to contact her
  

[Random_Nerd] The attempt to contact has no result, this time.
[Theresa] "I hope William's fiancee isn't a bridezilla. He deserves better than that."
[Ftisk] "Bridezilla? Is a different species that human?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Arguably."
[Ftisk] "And is dangerous to others?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "And themselves."
[DanteE] "Well, let's try to get her back. Are you sure you can get the same spirit?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Sure."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "That's not tricky."
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Not like this freaky experimental stuff you guys have me do."
[Ftisk] "Let's do it then! You need my help in something?"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Okay. I'll do that. Give me... like, forty minutes."
[Ftisk] "No pro!"
[Brian] "Experimental stuff is fun!"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "And after I'm done... shall we say we're even for the whole Summer Glau thing?"
[Ftisk] "Yep Brian!"
[Brian] "Just look at the fun we had!" *waves his hand toward the melted cage, and Mac truck*
[Theresa] "That would be acceptable to me, Shadows. And dinner is on us? Amyran cusine at its best!"
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "That works for me. I'll give you a call when the critter's back."
[DanteE] "OK. Meanwhile, I'll go meet William's fiancee... and check to make sure nothing ate the tower..."

[Random_Nerd] Shadows takes a dramatic pose, and then starts vaguely waving his wand left and right.

[Random_Nerd] William is standing there, in slacks and a nice shirt but without the usual jacket. Standing next to him is a tall skinny woman. She's actually about an inch and a half taller than William. Her hair is a reddish-brown, but not the bright red of William's, and she has a skinny, rawboned sort of look.
[Random_Nerd] William: "Thanks for the save. You would not have believed who dropped by to 'chat'."
[Ftisk] (King John?)
[Theresa] "Allen? Gnomely?"
[Theresa] "Lesson?"
[Brian] "Kudzu?"
[DanteE] "...Kudzu?"
[Theresa] "And we had a guest too. Ftisk's Warmain visited for a moment."
[DanteE] (jinx)
[Random_Nerd] William: "Remember how I told you that Aaron the Second was getting married?"
[DanteE] "Oh, him?"
[Random_Nerd] W: "Well, he and his girlfriend decided to stop by. I don't even know how they knew Lisa was coming over here today."
[Ftisk] (spy network?)

• Theresa blinks.
  

[Brian] "erm?"
[Random_Nerd] William: "Well, I tried to act friendly and play host, but seriously, I cannot stand that guy."
[Random_Nerd] William: "It's not even the corrupt damned gang boss thing, he's just so /smug/."
[Random_Nerd] William: "And this is coming from /me/."
[Random_Nerd] Lisa snorts at that.
[DanteE] quietly, to William: "What does she know about your job, by the way?"
[Random_Nerd] William: "The broad details. She came here through the Borderland, and so forth. But she hasn't had the training, so please don't do anything... flashy... around her."
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "You must be... Dante?"
[DanteE] "I am indeed. Hello."
[Random_Nerd] She shakes your hand.
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "He's mentioned you... all of you, quite a few times."
[Random_Nerd] She looks around.
[Theresa] (*waits for it*)
[Random_Nerd] She glances at Theresa's fingers.

• Theresa waves with a grin.
  

[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "Theresa? Brian?"
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "And I heard there was a bird and a snail."
[Ftisk] (the snail wait the doll)
[Theresa] "Pleased to meet you! And as part of my price for the lack of fingers, they were paid as a price for some knowledge from Jan Ben Jan."
[Random_Nerd] William: "I didn't make them up. Really."

• Brian nods "Nice to meet you. And there snail is away, and isn't presently a snail, and the bird is ... I don't know where. He's flighty. Pun not intended."
  

[DanteE] "They're in the library at the moment.
[Theresa] "The bird is currently working with his own Aide, like William."
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "And he's the one who's like Mimir, from the myth?"
[Random_Nerd] She smiles at the mention of the library.
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "The palace one?"
[Theresa] "Yes, like Mimir. Knowledge must be paid for and if you give a part of yourself, you're not going to treat the knowlege lightly."
[DanteE] "No, the other one. (to William) Some interesting things happened..."
[Random_Nerd] William: "Chinese curse interesting?"
[Random_Nerd] William, to Lisa: "No, not the one I told you about. The one they mean is... it's complicated, I'll explain later."
[Random_Nerd] Ftisk, Shadows is continuing to go through what seem like a series of carefully rehearsed words and motions.

• Theresa smiles at Lisa. "You'll have to let me know what kind of flowers you'd like for the wedding."
  

[DanteE] "It's a Noble thing, really. If you tried to understand without training chances are smoke would come out of your ears."
[Random_Nerd] William, to Theresa: "Lisa's a librarian. I've arranged with John for her to help him catalogue some of the older books in the palace library."
[DanteE] "Ah, good idea. Just stay away from the ones bound in skin."

• Theresa 's smile gets even bigger. "Oh, that is _wonderful_! Most of the palace library has seen so much disuse over the years." *thinks about what if Aaron decides to write a book*
  

[DanteE] "... actually I was kidding, but if you do spot one would you let us know?"
[Random_Nerd] William: "They don't have a necronomicon."
[Random_Nerd] William: "But they /do/ have some records of some of the Crusades that don't, as far as I know, exist anywhere else in the world."
[Brian] "good."
[Random_Nerd] William: "That's way /more/ interesting, at least to me."
[Brian] "I'm never quite sure if the Necronomicon actually exists."
[Random_Nerd] Dollphaniel begins to expand and contract.
[Random_Nerd] Lisa: "Well, there's like six fake ones out there."

• Ftisk stare to the body ostensibly

[Theresa] "If it does, a Noble probably has it."
[DanteE] (Should we have a welcome dinner later?)
[Random_Nerd] Dollphaniel begins to expan and contract much quicker, and make a sound like a cat that's about to throw up.
[Ftisk] (Yess! Ftisk will love the dinner!)
[Theresa] (She can come with us out with Shadows.)

[Random_Nerd] Shadows finishes his chant, and makes a sharp slashing gesture with his hooked rod.
[Theresa] (I don't like that sound.)
[Random_Nerd] Dollphaniel makes a sound like metal grinding, and vomits up two things.

• Ftisk poke DollP "Are you ok?"
  

[Random_Nerd] One is the Active Writing paper that had vanished earlier.

• Ftisk look at the things
  

[Random_Nerd] On it is scrawled, in some greenish fluid, "I believe I am being returned to the place in which my mind is filled with hunger and cruelty. Whoever is there, know you that that is not my true nature."
[Random_Nerd] The other is a photo of what looks like Dante in a frilly pink dress.
[Random_Nerd] Shadows: "Dammit, I am /not/ drunk."
[Random_Nerd] Dollphaniel makes a cooing noise at him, and then begins to hover.

[lazarus] I found a new mind map site: CrowdMap. Its app is cheaper than MindMeister, and currently the web interface allows for all features, unlimited maps (and syncs to the iPad for those of us with one)

[lazarus] I don't know, however, if it's a worthwhile app for the iPad ... and until I use them, I can't know, which means that ... grr!
