«Random_Nerd» Tests halfway through a college or grad-school course that are a substantial portion of the final grade.
«Lazarus» exams halfway through the term. See how people are doing, and normally allows for the two exams to each cover half the course in good detail.

«Lazarus» I'm considering doing a Music Minor in my degree - though the student advisor said that "Minor" is not a common term for the thing, and that most people wouldn't know what they are. Was that advisor full of shit, like I think she was?
«BethE» (Angelo - while RN just has either a paper or one test. No homework, no quizzes, just one chance.)
«BethE» I've heard of Minors.
«Random_Nerd» Weird. Minors are pretty much mandatory in US undergrad.
«Knockwood» Hm. They might not be 'official'...
«Verithe» I don't know of any English speaking adult that doesn't know what a Minor is.
«Lazarus» That's what I thought.
«Angelo» (Beth, no, our are like normal exams if you go well then the final one is lighter otherwise if full strength).
«Lazarus» would doing an extra semester for a B CS (Minor Music) be a good thing, instead of just keeping with the B CS?
«Lazarus» (bearing in mind that after this term, I have one course that I need to do anyway...)

«Knockwood» Well, are you 'on time' for a 4-year degree?
«Lazarus» kwd: this is my ... 8th year, more or less? (with 2-3 years off, admittedly, but still)
«Random_Nerd» True. Finishing in more than 4 years can look bad...

«Knockwood» Well, considering I took 5 years and I'm doing OK...
«Random_Nerd» Yeah, I had a gap in between the first and second year of my undegrad. Worked out fine.
«Random_Nerd» Sometimes stuff just comes up.
«Angelo» I'm still in that gap from ... 10years :-P
«Lazarus» downside of the minor, though: needs 2 1st year courses, and I've already got my full complement of 1st years. So it would knock out a couple courses (fortunately, the lowest graded ones ;) And counts for both, so ... just needs doing), and 2 3rd year MUSI courses. And I don't qualify for 3rd year theories :(.
«Random_Nerd» Heh, remembering when I took a music theory class, and I was the only one there who wasn't a music major or minor.
«Knockwood» Well, do you really need Theory of Music to, like, RAWK OWT with your garage band, d00d?!?
«Random_Nerd» Turns out you can learn to sight-read and play the piano /really fast/ if you have to!
«Random_Nerd» At least to "close enough for government work" standards.
«Lazarus» kwd: not so much on Garage Band, but do need for composition and such.

«Lazarus» I find it amusing that I got an A+ and quite probably the best grade in the Choral Conducting class I took last semester - I was the only non-Music student. The rest of them were ... treating it as a joke, mostly.

«Kite» Kite wants to ask Dante to give/preserve Jonathan's courage. We could do that off-screen if we'd rather push ahead.

«DanteE» (Yeah, we should be dealing with the Attack on Duty...

«Random_Nerd» Okay, how about this. First, we do a bit more with Kite's cult, because that's what we ended with last time.

«Random_Nerd» And then a meeting at Amyra to discuss plans for the bigger meeting?

«Random_Nerd» And if you're wondering how you can tell that without seeing his face, well, dionyl have very expressive body language.

«DanteE» (What exactly were they doing? ISTR something about a blackboard...)
«Random_Nerd» (The Spear is practicing putting together pre-fabricated furniture, to get a handle on Assembly.)
«Random_Nerd» (Jonathan is trying to work out a way to explain it to dionyl.)
«Brian» (aside) "Sam, remind me that I want to set up a kind of enclave back home. A ... numbers-cave, if you will, I suppose. It can probably wait until after the immediate crises are dealt with, though"

«Random_Nerd» Sam: "We can do that, Boss. Do you want it at the clocktower, or somewhere else?"
«Theresa» (But wouldn't that make Kite = Thor?)
«Ftisk» (Ftisk the one called as my character Ftisk but bulkier and less godly)
«Brian» "Somewhere else. Wouldn't do to have home and work at the same place, eh?"
«DanteE» (I'm usually pretty thor after putting Ikea thtuff together)

«Random_Nerd» (Oh, the non-mobile prototype Ftisk?)
«Kite» to Jonathan: "So...er...do you have any questions or do you feel you have a good idea of what Assembly is?"
«Ftisk» (yes that one but is mobile, but don't fly, just crawl like a real snail)
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "Okay. Want me to pick an architect? I figure that even though you'll probably just make it yourself with miraculous force, it still helps to have a plan made by a professional to refer to."
«DanteE» (Also, Kite, did you make that request of me IC yet?)
«Kite» (not yet)
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan: "It makes sense now, especially here. But I'm trying to work out a way to make it make sense to those who haven't seen it."
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan: "The puzzles, the desks, they're useful... but there has to be a way to do it with /words/."

  • Kite nods

«Brian» "Sure, go ahead and pick an architect."
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan: "Hmm. Why does putting words together into a sentence not count as Assembly? Or does it, but it also counts as something else that /does/ exist back home?"
«Random_Nerd» (The latter is in fact the case.)
«Theresa» (Hmm, probably Communication.)
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how... Batman... do you want it to be?"
«Brian» "Might as well see what kind of manor like structure with a ... bat-cave in the basement can be made. Rent out a few of the wings ..."
«Kite» "It's...something similar, but probably exists beyond Assembly. Do you think you could use it as a metaphor?"
«Theresa» "You should also ask him if you have to wear a tux or butler outfit, Sam."
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan: "That may be the best approach, actually! Things that are Assembly, but are /also/ something else that we /do/ know!"
«Brian» "Um. scale of 1-10, Adam West."
«Random_Nerd» He starts pacing.

«Random_Nerd» Sam: "You... don't want to put a number to it?"

«Kite» "Sam mentioned that you have quilting on Dionyl. Does it function the same as here?"
«Kite» "Or similarly enough?"
«DanteE» (maybe choral chords?)
«Brian» "Adam West _IS_ a number. Just like Chuck Norris, but for cheese instead of awesome."
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan thinks.
«Random_Nerd» Jonathan: "I don't actually know how it works here."

  • Theresa LCs a cotton quilt. Lots of different colors and blocks.

«Random_Nerd» Sam: "It's a little different from what I've seen, but not... very different. Is... is there a Power of Quilts?"
«Kite» "I'll arrange a tour of an Earth quilting bee later to see if you can use it as a metaphor. Do...how do you think you will handle the return to Dionyl?"
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "This is weird. Seeing the few things that /do/ function like Assembly on Dionyl just draws attention to all the things that don't."

  • Theresa hands Sam the earthen quilt.

«DanteE» (reminds me of a story... you guys know the game Apples to Apples?)
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "But... hmm. Part of it's in the meaning."
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "To us, a quilted piece of fabric isn't a unified thing."
«Ftisk» (nope)
«Theresa» (I've played.)
«Kite» (I love that game)
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "It's a bunch of squares of fabric that happen to be attached to each other»"
«Brian» (yes, I know that game, though never played it. On my to buy list, though - my mom's family plays lots of party games)
«Theresa» "Oh? Huh. While to us, the blocks of fabric are just scraps until put together into the quilt."
«DanteE» (Ftisk: short version: players have a hand of cards with nouns on them, and there are green cards with adjectives. You play the noun in your hand that best matches the adjective.(
«DanteE» (Anyway... guy told me about how he was playing, and the adjective was 'cheesy'.
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "It's like how when you tie your neckcloths together to... oh, wait. You guys just use a single piece of fabric for that."
«DanteE» (He figured he had an easy point because he played 'cheese'.
«DanteE» "Well, 2, actually, shell and lining."
«Random_Nerd» Sam: "Really? Huh. I've never looked at them that closely."

«Random_Nerd» (So, if we want to move on, this seems like a decent place to do so, but do you guys have more you want to do in this scene?)
«DanteE» (Hm...he may not need me.)
«Theresa» (Or is it better if Jon thinks them and she writes?)
«Random_Nerd» (She can't.)
«Random_Nerd» (She's learning, but her ability to read and write is still pretty limited.)

«DanteE» (Actually, there's a slight chance they'll go off on a wrong path)
«Kite» (If this is Jonathan's will becoming stronger. But if not, I'd like to work on that, still.)

«Random_Nerd» (It's less that he just fundamentally changed, and more that... this is a side of him you've not seen before.)

«Brian» (I want to Enchant the DanteMobile with the Persona of Amyra, specifically to give it the property of Paths to Places. ... or possibly using the Domain? Something like that, anyway - it can find or create its own paths is what I'm looking for)

«Brian» (RN: what exactly are the mechanics on the making the DanteMobile have super-GPS teleportation powers? Is it Persona or Domain in this case?)

«Random_Nerd» You pull up at what used to be an abandoned warehouse in a downscale part of town.
«DanteE» "OK, what exactly did you do to my car?"
«DanteE» "Not that I'm complaining."
«Random_Nerd» It's still a downscale part of town. But it looks like it's getting better, rather than worse.
«Kite» "I had to store the forks /somewhere/!"
«Brian» "Made it auto calculate those paths that Sam did. Since, well, I could, and it's useful."

  • DanteE views the area in Mythic.

«Kite» "Oh, you meant Brian."
«Random_Nerd» And it still looks like an abandoned warehouse, but the windows are shiny and reflective, rather than broken and boarded up.

  • DanteE checks his glove box...

«Random_Nerd» The lesser spirits of the city, the Sidewalk Nymphs and Smoke Sylphs, are still a bit shabby-looking, but have fresh haircuts and news suits of clothing.

  • Ftisk look around with my last eye

«DanteE» "Someone's redecorating..."
«Random_Nerd» Above the doorway of the warehouse is a big bronze sign that says "Dogs Come Here."
«Theresa» "It looks like someone _cares_ again."
«Random_Nerd» William walks up to the door and knocks.

  • Ftisk fly on Dante shoulder

«Random_Nerd» The double-doors open inward, with a collie and a German shepherd pulling on padded handles with their mouths.
«DanteE» "Hm. That opens up another possibility about the nature of the attack..."
«Random_Nerd» William: "Some of this may just be that Mike isn't... rotting... any more. The king and the land are one."
«DanteE» "I wondered about that."
«Kite» "Not rotting is good."
«Random_Nerd» The interior smells of quite a few things. Dogs, both dry and damp. Several different kinds of meat. Leather. Various woods.
«Theresa» "It's hard to keep up a place when you're worried you're going to die any moment."
«Theresa» (Bacon!)
«Random_Nerd» The floors are hardwood, faintly marked by the claws of various canines.
«Brian» (bacon?)
«Brian» (where?!)
«Theresa» (Bacon for good dogs.)
«Brian» (oooh.)
«Ftisk» (I can make cows)
«Random_Nerd» The interior is mainly one big room. Clearly, a lot of work has been done.
«Random_Nerd» The wood floors are new, and the place clearly has electricity now, judging from the lights and refrigerators.
«Random_Nerd» Mike is reposing on a richly upholstered couch, of a color to match his fur.
«DanteE» (Hey! Off the furniture! :) )
«Random_Nerd» Mythically, the golden crown bolted to his head gleams more brightly than it should given the lighting conditions.
«Random_Nerd» As you enter the room, all the dogs lying on the floor, on various rugs, or near the three fireplaces stand up on all four legs.
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "And what brings you back here so soon, honored guests?"

  • Ftisk wave

«Kite» (Wood floors! For that runrunrunsliiiiiiiiiide experience!)
«Theresa» "We wanted to see how you and your pack were doing."
«Random_Nerd» Incidentally, there are humans here. Not a lot of them, but four or five. One is grooming a small silky-haired dog, and another is carefully filling a dozen dog bowls with chopped pieces of meat.
«Ftisk» "HI!"
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "The place is not fully in order yet. There is still much to be done. But I have made a start."
«Brian» "Ftisk, remember, dogs are subject to DA."

  • Ftisk shut my mouth and pout to Brian

«Random_Nerd» (And all cats have DA naturally!)
«DanteE» "You've moved up in the world."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "I am building up those things that I will need to do my work. Creature-comforts for my subjects, symbols of authority, and so forth."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "Dogs still forget their place, forget how to be dogs. But I am making it be so that no dog is without others to remind him of who and what he is."
«Theresa» "They have family. to help them." *nods* "Good work."
«Kite» "Do you find it works?"
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "It /will/ work. I will see to it."
«DanteE» "Speaking of which..."
«Theresa» (Nice determination.)
«DanteE» "We got some more information on what may have happened."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "I do not have all of the powers that one with my job would normally have. But I do have the job, and so I will learn to make do with what I have."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "Any further understanding I have of this problem will help me in my work. Explain, please."
«DanteE» "Did anyone tell you of the Valde Bellum?"
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "Not my problem. I just look after the dogs."
«DanteE» "Ah... it's all Nobles' problem."
«Brian» "That's all you have to do"
«Brian» "Look after the dogs."
«Brian» "But, it is a backdrop to what happened."

  • Theresa nudges Dante. "He just needs to do what Hounds tells him to."

«Random_Nerd» Mike: "There's something you may need to understand. I'm not doing this because my father told me to."
«Ftisk» "no?"
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "I'm doing this because I owe it to them, because I can, and because nobody else is going to if I don't."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "It may not make much of a difference to you, but it does to me."
«Ftisk» "Aha right"
«Theresa» *nod* "Now that is Duty, right there."
«Brian» "It is quite important that the dogs get taken care of."

«Random_Nerd» To the Sight, he looks brighter than an Anchor, but duller than a Noble. About the same as the Giant looks, really.
«Random_Nerd» Mythically, he's a large and tall dog, even bigger and more muscular-looking than he is in real life, with a gleaming golden circlet bolted to his skull. However, the bolts look a little different than they did before. Newer, like he took out the old ones and replaced them with shinier ones.
«Theresa» "Well, the beings that we report to may call upon you to give testimony. It is a good warning in case you are suddenly pulled through time and space to somewhere else."
«DanteE» (We had a theory about where his 'specialness' came from, right?")
«Brian» "To people who may cause magical locusts to eat your insides."
«Theresa» (I think I get it. The shiny bolts are the ones he put in, that he's helping the dogs of his own cause, not because of his dad.)
«DanteE» "Did they tell you Entropy's Rules?"
«Theresa» "This may cause you to come to the attention of other powerful beings."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "I've decided that those don't apply to me. We'll see if he agrees, if the situation ever comes up."

«Random_Nerd» (The closest you've met to a Noble without a Chancel was Ken Duncan. Even he wasn't /exactly/ a Noble, but he's a lot closer to it than Mike is.)
«DanteE» "Do you have an idea where it's coming from?"
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "A lot of it's just making sure that all dogs have other dogs to check in on them, see that they're remembering how to be dogs."
«Random_Nerd» Mike: "It doesn't seem to come from a 'where' in a way that I can tell."
