«Etheric» I figure from there (from knowing how her meditation on Hope not solving Hell ended up) I can do Bonds, which will explain in my own mind how the Codes settled out, when she got past her intimidation by Barakiel. And that itself is going to clarify for me how the rest of her stats balance out, once I've gotten to that point.

«Etheric» Laz, I forget if I asked, but my question earlier was really intended to be about the program you are studying under. Unless I miss my guess, you have more than completed a Bachelor's degree by now, so what degree are you seeking?

«Random_Nerd» Oh, it's funny, I got my grades for the end of the last semester of law school, and you can actually chart me being increasingly worn out as finals week-and-a-half progresses. At the beginning, I have an A in the first one. Then as the classes progress, there's two A-minuses, two B-plusses, and one B-minus. It's almost funny.

«Etheric» The only thing I know for sure is that the monitor that I have on this computer is an LED, and that I hope to goodness that it is just a loose cable or something since it is pixelating off and on almost every day now. I have put off repair in the vain hope that maybe one of my older machines can be made to function so that I'm not completely netless or reliant on family charity.

«Random_Nerd» Heh, reminds me of when the LCD on my laptop was dying. It was under warranty, but the guy from the company who came to fix it first put one of the wrong resolution on, and then when I noticed it and convinced them that I really did have a screen of the kind I used to have... when putting it on, he fried my hard drive. Somehow.

«DanteE» "So, any... I hate to tell you this, but I think you'll need to study Physics.
«Kite» (I like Miriam's taste in coffee.)
«Random_Nerd» William heads out of the room for a moment.
«DanteE» "That is, Physics as mundane scientists know it.
«Random_Nerd» Miriam: "Yeah, I know. But before I do that, I need to study marksmanship."
«Random_Nerd» Miriam: "Fortunately, there is some crossover."
«Theresa» (Poor William. He must like his coffee straight.)
«Random_Nerd» She smirks.
«Random_Nerd» Miriam: "That's one thing I /can/ get physics to do. Ballistic calculations."
«DanteE» "Does that thing have a 'low' setting?"
«Brian» "Handy *smile*"

«DanteE» "Well, people learn pistols by putting holes in paper."
«Brian» "You don't always need total obliteration..."
«Random_Nerd» Miriam: "It does have power settings. The low end is still a bit above the speed of sound. And the spikes I have for it weigh about half a pound."

«DanteE» "He wasn't big on stealth, I'm guessing."
«Theresa» "He was physics. Sound is just a wave."

«Random_Nerd» She reaches into her bag and pulls out a few metal spikes.

«Random_Nerd» They're about six inches long, and made of some kind of steel.
«Random_Nerd» Rounded at the back, pointy at the front.

«Random_Nerd» Miriam: "At first I worried that they'd tumble, with the lack of fins. But there's a thing in here" *pats gun* "that puts a spin on them."

«Random_Nerd» M: "Is that the thing that Jacob helped you out with, with the big magic physics ghost thing?"

«Random_Nerd» Theresa, you feel an itch in your leg.

«Theresa» "I don't want a firing range at the Grove. It's supposed to be peaceful, tranquil and you know that that acorn would want a gun of his own."

  • Theresa look down at my leg.

«DanteE» "Well, it is applied diplomacy..."
«Brian» "We can always set up a firing range elsewhere."

«Random_Nerd» It turns to more of a burning sensation.
«DanteE» "That desolate plain on the other side of Mount Melchior?"
«Kite» "You've got a whole country to work with, after all. Is there already a mundane firing range you could reinforce?"

«Random_Nerd» There's no visible sign of what's wrong, though.

  • Ftisk offer to Dante "Sun lotion?"

«Random_Nerd» The beach appears to be covered in a foul-smelling slimy red stuff.
«Random_Nerd» It looks a lot like algae, but not quite like any familiar kind of it.

  • DanteE looks around with The Sight...

«Theresa» (She is a truly noble and caring person. I'm still going to kick whoever this is, though.)
«Brian» "blood algae?"
«Kite» "...."
«Ftisk» "Wow!"
«Random_Nerd» The slime's mundane-looking. If a miracle was used to create it, it was some time ago, and it's baseline normal by now.
«Theresa» "My algae! My kelp! It's not even the right season for red tide!"
«DanteE» "... what holds it back?"
«Random_Nerd» The overall ambiance is somewhere between "red tide" and "oil spill."

  • Theresa bends over some of the stuff. "Can you understand me?"

«Random_Nerd» The grasses that had grown on parts of the beach where the algae reached are already dying or dead.
«Random_Nerd» (Using a miracle of conversation, or the Mythic world?)
«Theresa» (Mythic first.)
«Random_Nerd» As you bend over the stuff, the air above it feels /warm/.
«Theresa» "Don't let it touch you. Dante, may I borrow a small blade? It may get...hurt."
«Random_Nerd» Mythically, it looks like a bunch of extremely skinny reddish kudzu vines, curling and writhing on the ground.
«Theresa» (Oh, that's just an insult.)
«DanteE» "It's not like I don't have more..."
«Random_Nerd» Miriam hovers above the beach on her motorcycle.

  • DanteE hands over a dagger

«Random_Nerd» A few passerby wave to her in a vague, uninterested way.
«Random_Nerd» Kudzu-algae: "More!"
«Random_Nerd» First the bunch near Theresa says it, in a chirping voice.
«Random_Nerd» Then the pools in the vicinity start saying it.

  • Theresa pokes at the nearest bunch with the tip of the blade.

«DanteE» (Mythic, right?)
«Random_Nerd» A few seconds later, the entire beach, in a booming and gravelly voice, says "MORE."
«Random_Nerd» (Yes, mythic.)
«Theresa» (Looking to see if it affects the metal, eats the metal, or just leaves metal alone.)
«Brian» (in prosaic does it do anything?)
«Random_Nerd» (Nothing discernable.)
«Random_Nerd» Nothing noteworthy happens. The blade gets slime on it, but doesn't get eaten away, turn into a penguin, or whatever.

  • Ftisk look at mythic

«DanteE» "Hm... let me see something..."

  • Ftisk has signed off IRC (Connection reset by peer).

«Theresa» (Crap, it ate Ftisk!)

  • DanteE grabs the cherry from Miriam's drink and tosses it into the algae."

«Brian» (wouldn't be the first thing)
«Random_Nerd» Miriam, above the algae, appears to be tinkering with her glasses.
«Theresa» "Well, metal doesn't seem to be affected. So it can be contained."
«Random_Nerd» The sides of the cherry seem to start to slowly melt.
«Brian» (snails are a delicacy, after all)

«Random_Nerd» (Those of you with Aspect 2 or better can see that there's a very small dial, about half a centimeter across, worked into the right side of her glasses frame.)
«DanteE» to Ftisk: "You're the one who can make us an automatic collector."
«Theresa» *to the gunk* "Can you understand me?"
«Random_Nerd» M, shouting: "Has anyone else noticed how /hot/ that stuff is?"
«Ftisk» "yep dante!"
«Kite» "How hot is it?"
«Random_Nerd» Gunk, in a loud voice (But not like it's shouting. More like a Serpent trying to speak quietly): "Give us more!"

  • Ftisk lc an algae vacuumer

«Brian» "It is radiating."
«Theresa» "Yes, I can feel the heat above it. Can you tell if it's a molecular transformation of the plant chemicals?"
«Random_Nerd» M: "Well, hot like a mammal with a fever. But for a plant, that's really hot. What's it doing, that's making all that heat?"

  • Kite pokes at some of the dead beach grass.

«Theresa» "What is your purpose?"
«Brian» "Eating?"
«Random_Nerd» The grass seems starved.
«Random_Nerd» Algae, to T: "More!"
«Random_Nerd» Like what would happen if you tried to grow grass on a plastic surface or something.
«Theresa» "It could be...taking energy. Plants take sunlight, convert it to food. If this eats plants or living material, it can take that energy, giving off heat."
«Kite» "Theresa, I think the goop starved the grass."

  • Ftisk try to suck some algae with the collector

«DanteE» "I think what it's doing is what plants do, just turned up to 11, isn't it?"
«Brian» (I'm going to go afk for a bit, see if I can meet Sara at the bus stop. I shouldn't be more than 10, 15 minutes.)
«Random_Nerd» (Okay. Say 'hi' for us.)
«Kite» (be safe!)
«Random_Nerd» The algae is slurped up by Ftisk's machine.

  • Ftisk do a little happy dance

«Theresa» "Except plants don't actually 'take' it from other plants. Each gets what sun hits it, what nutrients are around it, what water falls. This is..aggressive."
«Random_Nerd» The algae, all over, seems to tremor or vibrate very slightly.
«DanteE» "Don't weeds do that?"
«Theresa» "This is like if plants came around and beat _you_ up for your carbon dioxide."
«DanteE» "or, for that matter, Kudzu?"
«Kite» (strangler fig!)
«DanteE» "... wait a sec."
«Ftisk» "Hey! can be cleaned easily"

  • Ftisk show the algae slurping

«Kite» "Why's it shaking?"

  • DanteE blows on a bit of algae and watches what happens

«Theresa» "It's a matter of what plants they are and the area. The nature of a plant is to do its growing, seeding, dying in its own time. Kudzu...is just following its ways after..being moved from its homeland. Man, the Boss gets into everything..."
«Random_Nerd» It sits there and acts like algae, but more so.
«DanteE» (Does it do anything with the CO2 from me?)
«Random_Nerd» (How are you checking?)
«DanteE» (If it's an attack, it may be 1 or 2 from Theresa's Estate properties)
«DanteE» (using Aspect to see if it's changing and Mythic view to see if it goes "Whoo! Thanks!")
«Random_Nerd» (Okay, but it would take a lot of aspect to be able to see CO2.)
«DanteE» (A3?)
«Random_Nerd» (More than that. Let me think...)
«DanteE» (Well, it might change color or grow a bit.)
«Random_Nerd» (Level 4.)
«Kite» (I get the feeling this is very ogre-like algae in that it will never be satisfied or say "thanks")
«DanteE» (I'll see what I can get with base Aspect)
«Theresa» (But can it say rawr?)
«DanteE» (... it's Corrupted algae?)
«Random_Nerd» (With Aspect 3, you can see it absorbing the moisture from your breath. You can see some little algae cells dying and other ones digesting them. And you can see some of the bigger cells splitting.)
«DanteE» "Hm... my breath isn't that bad...
«DanteE» "Theresa, is this stuff isn't photosynthesizing, what would that do to you?"
«Kite» "Can we kill it?"
«Random_Nerd» Miriam flies off to scout the area.
«Theresa» "Well, for just _me_, it would mean that this stuff could possibly eat anything plant-based that it comes across, could infect the entire ocean, thus taking out a large part of my estate...oh and there wouldn't be enough oxygen for humans to breathe, if these guys don't produce oxygen."
«DanteE» What's the status of Ftisk's machine?
«Random_Nerd» (How big was the machine?)
«Ftisk» (as big as a lesser creation can make it!)

«Random_Nerd» The densest concentrations seem to correspond with shallower water. Places where there is, or at least /was/, seaweed.
«Random_Nerd» In places where the ocean floor's a long way down, there's just a light dusting of the stuff.

«Random_Nerd» The problem, here, is that heavier concentrations don't seem to be places it originally came from, so much as places where it's found a lot of food.
«Brian» (How much stuff like phytoplankton is there in the area? Small organic thingies?)
«Random_Nerd» (It does seem to eat plankton, or at least starve it out by eating the same stuff.)
«Random_Nerd» (Same habitat, same diet, and this stuff competes better.)

«Random_Nerd» (You feel the locations of various "dead" spots. You also feel that some are more complete than others. In some of them, the plant-plankton and kelp are competing with this stuff. In others, they're just gone.)

«Etheric» So he probably could have made it fit on purpose without directly intending to involve Maslow's hierarchy of needs or whatever the grief thing actually came from.
