Liao Mei[edit]

Origin: Reporter

Passion: Joy

Immediate Goals: Gain protection from the Copper Devils, make enough money to survive

Future Goal: Become famous through all of Shen Zhou

Background: Liao Mei grew up in the family of a rich and successful businessman, with three other daughters, all of whom were willing to be pampered and seek husbands. Liao Mei, on the other hand, grew up brave and curious, and not content to sit back and be a meek girl. She sought out kung fu training from a nearby school, going in disguise and learning the art of Cloud Mastery. Over time, she strayed farther and farther, and her parents eventually disowned her when they found out she competed at a wulin tournament that her father attended! She fell on her feet, however, and is currently a fearless freelance reporter specializing in the criminal underworld. Her most recent assignment was to infiltrate the Copper Devils, a mercenary secret society that hires out as assassins and thugs. The undercover job lasted a year, during which time she earned their trust and gained their kung fu, before eventually fleeing them before she was forced to kill an innocent. Currently she is in hiding while fleeing the aftermath after she published several articles revealing many of their secrets.

Beliefs: Liao Mei believes in the importance of truth (a higher truth; she's willing to lie through her teeth to get at a story), justice, and protecting the weak. Perhaps her greatest belief is in the importance of self-sufficiency and that no one should be content to sit back and be cared for.

Contacts: Liao Mei knows the publisher of the district newspaper. They're not precisely friends, but he's published many of her stories and might know things in a pinch. She also maintains some limited contact with Liao Yi, her second oldest sister, who has lent her money occasionally in the past and provides her with tips on what's going on with the business world.

Hangouts: The Dragon's Tail: A favorite hangout of criminals and lowlifes, the Dragon's Tail is a bar with a seedy reputation, but isn't usually that dangerous for someone who keeps their wits about them. The Bao Yu Library: An extravagantly large private library with extensive records, Liao Mei can often be found here seeking information on a current case.

The Copper Devils: The Copper Devils are a mercenary secret society that hires out for muscle and specializing in terror tactics. Founded by a woman rumored to be a Mao Shan exile, it's philosophy is strongly Objectivist, believing only in the strength and authority of power, with their main goal the acquisition of more power and influence.
