Background[edit]

Shido "Vicious" Hishiyasu is an overweight middle-aged man who might have once been athletic, but one too many heavy meals have taken their toll on his frame. His fingers are thick, his features are brutish, and he faces the world with a scowl that induces others to do the same to him. He appears to be nothing more than a washed-up thug well past his prime, and that is an illusion he takes pains to cultivate. He might be flabby, but he is fast; and his physical speed is matched only by that of his mind. He wants people to underestimate him, he wants them to take him lightly... because it means they'll be off their guard against him.

In his youth, Vicious applied to the University of Proserpina, as a way out of the menial drudge of the working life his family led. Being mentally and physically adept (at the time), his application was accepted, and but once he was in, he found that there was a barrier in his path; namely, bushido. Though he grasped the theory and practice of the MechWarrior's basic skills quickly enough, he was constantly dressed-down by his lecturers and bullied by his peers when he tried to apply the lessons he'd learned in unconventional ways. It rankled at him to see them preach mindless obedience to hidebound lessons from the past, which, in his opinion, could sorely use an updating to the 31st century.

Naturally, this meant he didn't get along with his fellow pupils or the staff. But he could parrot out the requisite answers to fit their pro forma exams, so he scored well and he couldn't simply be expelled. For that, they had to get creative. The night before a live-fire exercise, they arranged to have the ammunition for his autocannon sabotaged, which would have caused a deadly ammo explosion had he fired the rounds in question. However, Vicious had already anticipated their clumsy attempts at treachery and right after they loaded the spiked ammo into his bins, he arranged to have them re-distributed to his tormentors. On the day of the exercise, he turned to watch his rivals blow themselves up; which they did, causing tens of thousands of C-Bills of damage, putting three of them into critical care. However, where base trickery failed, nepotism succeeded; under intense pressure from the relatives of the victims, the University was forced to expel him in disgrace under a paper-thin pretense. Vicious knew this was a fight he couldn't win and didn't bother fighting it, but he took pleasure in knowing that only one of his victims would go on to graduate after repeating the year; the other two were too badly injured to ever pilot a Mech again.

Still, the spectre of his discharge would haunt him for the rest of his career. He was blacklisted from just about every institute of higher learning and respectable military unit in the DCMS thanks to the influence of his victims' families, but he refused to return to his commoner's life; that would mean accepting defeat, and though Vicious disdained bushido, he had his pride. But the only military unit that would take him was the Legions of Vega; specifically, Two Vega, the Dragon's Raiders.

Going there was almost as bad as returning to civilian life, but he held on to the hope that he could secure a promotion out of it, or at least make enough money to start afresh. His commanders had heard of his reputation, and he was assigned the most distasteful jobs; executions, terror missions, all the things that even the dregs of a warrior society didn't want to soil their hands with. In this, he excelled beyond all expectations; indeed, his callsign of "Vicious" came from his habit of shooting through hostages to kill the bandits who took them. However, such brutality had its price; his Lance was ambushed after a successful operation, and he was the only survivor. His prolonged hospitalization resulted in a noticeable weight gain, and by the time he was discharged, he had ballooned up from his previously fit self. Still, Vicious considers the fact that he survived victory enough; and he's determined to make sure he doesn't make the same mistake with his attackers.
