Skein of Worlds « Stories and Plot Hooks

This is a collection of ideas for stories to tell using this setting. There is plenty of room for new ideas as well as for expanding existing ideas. (Also, if you have a better name for any of these ideas, please change them. I'm horrible with names.)

Low Level Adventures[edit]

Youthful Curiosity[edit]

It's rumored that the mysterious rock formations in the nearby foothills reacts strangely to the light of a blue moon. Some youths/young adventurers/etc get together to find out the truth. When the blue moon passes, they are left in an unfamiliar land surrounded by creatures that they thought were mere legend.

Some Roles[edit]

  • The lost adventurers
  • The heroes sent to find the lost adventurers
  • The people on the other side that run into the lost adventurers
  • The local townsfolk, especially those in charge and those related to the adventurers
  • Any intelligent beings on the other side

Plot Twists[edit]

  • The story takes place on the other side of the portal where a small group of armed beings of unfamiliar race have been spotted wandering the area.
  • The Society of Doors gets involved and seing no way to profit from a portal with an astronomical key being attempts to rekey the portal, which could leave the adventurers stranded on the other side.

Lost Keys[edit]

An heirloom pendant causes the carvings in a nearby cave to open onto an unfamiliar vista. The owner is approached by a strange man offering a large sum of money for the pendant.

  • The potential Society of Doors recruit sent to buy it
  • Uninvolved parties that somehow get involved
  • The Society recruiter
  • The greedy drinking buddy of the owner of the heirloom

Plot Twists[edit]

  • The locals on the other side aren't friendly and the town is overrun by these strange creatures or beings

Mid Level Adventures[edit]

Invasion from Above[edit]

A giant ship descends from the sky laden with strange green humanoids carrying powerful magic weapons. They seem intent on conquering the planet.

Some Roles[edit]

  • Grunts in the invading army
  • Those defending against the invasion
  • The commanders of the army
  • The local rulers organizing the defence

Plot Twists[edit]

Beings from the Void[edit]

A mysterious geode suddenly hatches into a strange winged reptile. Various forces attempt to capture and control it, until the mother/father/both arrives from the void.

Some Roles[edit]

  • The owner of the geode/egg
  • Uninvolved parties drug into the conflict
  • The various powers attempting to gain control of the creature

Plot Twists[edit]

  • One of the powers in the conflict expected the arrival of the parents all along and was attempting to use the confusion and destruction to advance some other agenda

Whispers in Darkness[edit]

A number of people have gone missing over the past few months. Their mutilated corpses turn up some time later, but no attempts made to contact their soul or resurrect them have succeeded.

  • The investigators
  • The victims
  • The cultists
  • Those related to the victims
  • Those in charge that may or may not have ties to the cultists

Plot Twists[edit]

  • One of the cultists stayed behind and claims that the Whisperers are not the ones responsible for the sacrifices but were actually trying to stop the true culprits
  • The sacrifices were part of some larger plot that is beginning to pay off, releasing bizzare creatures into the world and/or driving normal people mad
