Description and Background:[edit]

She is a woman of standard height and athletic build dressed in an immaculate commissar uniform. Her cropped blonde hair lies neatly under her cap and her green eyes gaze severely at anyone who gains her attention. Her face could be described as handsome, but she rarely smiles, instead creasing her features up into a perpetually angry scowl. She always stands up straight and never forgets her military formality.

Tanith has no idea what happened to her parents. She was never told. All she remembers is suddenly being whisked away from her hive spire home to the schola progenium. At the school, Tanith was a good student, although drawn more to the physical pursuits than the academic ones. She had expected to be chosen for stormtrooper training, but was surprised and delighted to be selected by the Commissariat instead.

Early during her school years, she had become close friends with a girl named Jesseline and the two became notorious for pranking teachers and students alike - in particular, the Navy cadets learned to live in fear of what the terrible two had planned next. Although they frequently got in trouble for their pranks, it never put them off, even later on when they had been selected for their destines - Jesseline was chosen as a novice of the Sororitas.

But Tanith was a natural bully, and her commissar training only brought that out further in her. She took personal delight in tormenting a boy named Linius who was small and frail. Despite her bullying, Linius remained calm and never quite gave in, perhaps due to being picked as an inquisition apprentice.

Eventually it was time to graduate. Tanith and Jesseline hugged and promised to remain in touch and Linius got a final beating before he headed off with his new inquisitor. Of course, all three went off to different worlds and staying in touch didn't really happen. Tanith found herself assigned as a cadet to the 46th Scintillan Rifles, an ancient and proud infantry unit with a very long history of honour and courage. Her commissar mentor was a legend of the time and Tanith really couldn't have been happier - she worked hard to prove herself, and did so successfully. A number of years later, she was recommended to the Commissariat for promotion to full commissar.

Now a commissar in her own right, she keenly awaited her first assignment. The orders finally came through and she ripped open the message tube, excited to learn which regiment she would be responsible for. As she read it, her face turned to confusion and dismay. Instead of reporting to a regiment, she had been told to report to the Inquisition.

Orders were orders, so Tanith packed her bag and went. Upon arrival, she was coldly informed that an individual of her talents was required to serve the Inquisition as an acolyte and that this was the duty assigned to her. Tanith was bitterly disappointed, seeing her dream career as a commissar in tatters. But she had no choice in the matter. Her misery turned to anger, and since then she has focused that anger, coldly carrying out the duties asked of her with professionalism but never with true heart. Meeting up again with Jesseline, now a full sister of the Sororitas, provided some cheer but was also a surprise... until she slipped across a memo that stated that the selection of the two former pranksters for this duty had been down to one Linius - now far more senior in the Inquisition.

With hate and anger in her heart, Tanith is perhaps even more the perfect servant of the God-Emperor. But she dreams of being released from this duty to return to the Imperial Guard and become the 'proper' commissar that she had trained as.

(Moral of the story: don't bully Inquisition apprentices at school. They have long memories.)
