Back to Superheroes

Practically since superheroes first appeared, the military of the world have been keenly interested in them. Whether through the recruitment of existing superhumans or through a variety of "supersoldier" projects, the armies of every industrialized nations (and many non-industrialized ones) ensure that they can bring superpowers to the table.

In the US, supersoldiers were originally attached to regular forces. This arrangement worked well enough during WWII, but after Vietnam, if was felt (rightly or not) that the system needed an overhaul. It was decided to create a special unit specializing in the application of superpowers, and to place every American super-soldier in it.

The US military's official supergroup, Task Force Meta counts nearly 30 members nowadays. Their leader is Jennifer West, aka American Eagle, whose mutant ability to generate immense amounts of kinetic energy serves to power her winged battlesuit.

Task Force Meta has been the spearhead of many operations - not all of them military (they do work with "civilian" super-heroes rather often, when the situation calls for it). In recent days, they have fought both in Afghanistan and Iraq, being assisted in the latter by Omnicorp's new Mecha-Tanks.

While many have criticized the original creation of the task force as a publicity stunt by politicians trying to shake away the specter of Vietnam, few would deny that it is a highly effective force nowadays.
