Faster than Light[edit]
Sling Drive[edit]
The Sling Drive was the original FTL drive of know space and is still in use by merchant fleets and the like as it is far, far cheaper to build and maintain than Jump Drive. The system works by using a series of large rings to accelerate a ship rapidly and in effect sling it to the target area. When exploring new systems or system that do not have a Sling Drive of there own the ships need to manually slow themselves this uses a large amount of fuel which was a major factor in the slow expansion of territory of the races of known space.
In connected systems a second catch ring is built to slow ships down.
Jump Drive[edit]
A technology created by the Terran Empire, the drive creates an artifical gravity wave around its self and rides it in order to achieve FTL flight. This means that it allows for greater speeds than sling drive even more importantly there is no need to build fixed Sling Rings to accelerate ships. However natural gravity waves interfere with the operation of the Jump drive most ships use the so called jump points areas in a system where the gravity is cancelled out.
Because of the innacuracy of the system it is common to use the vernix and Nadir points above and below the plain of the system, its is rumoured that the Empire is researching a much more accurate drive that could use smaller points such as the Lagrange points.
