Background:
Marten's First Change was in his early 20s, when he woke up in the middle of the night to find his house ablaze and lost control of himself while trying to rescue his family. Marten's mother and his beloved younger sister died that night, and he still doesn't know whether the fire killed them... or he did.

After the fire, Marten fled his familiar surroundings and wandered Chicago for a few days, trying to come to terms with what had happened to him. Unbeknownst to him, he was being followed by the werewolf who had bitten him before his Change. Eventually, this Forsaken approached Marten in Hishu form and introduced herself as Sarah Rainbringer, a Bone Shadow Cahalith (Chicago, p. 210). When she tried to tell Marten what he truly was, however, he snapped and bolted - straight into the territory of a pack of Pure. Fortunately, the rest of Sarah's pack was nearby, and after a brief scuffle, they managed to get Marten out alive.

Marten hung around with the Whispers for a while after that, learning an Ithaeur's duties from Sleepless William and learning about the Bone Shadows from Sarah, eventually choosing to join the tribe himself. He took William's cause to heart and even followed the Ithaeur's lead in binding a rain spirit for a totem when he finally got a pack of his own. After hearing Marten's story, William was the one to dub him Ashpaw and point him towards an acquaintance in the Lodge of Death, though Marten hesiated for years before making contact. After making sure Marten had his feet under him, the Whispers cast him out to find his own pack and territory.

Marten met his current packmates over a period of several years, while he was in one struggling pack after another. During this time, he was also progressing rapidly in his chosen career of firefighter, ending up with an inspector position after only five years. When half of his last pack died or disappeared trying to claim some territory that turned out to belong to a group of... somethings, Marten decided he would start a new pack of his own. He contacted Autumn first, since he knew he would need a reliable Rahu to watch his back while building the rest of the pack. Tina was the last recruit, stumbling into the others just as they were despairing of finding a suitable Cahalith who would join an unproven pack. With a newly formed pack, the next order of business was territory and a totem, and the Smoke Stalkers claimed both of those things for themselves with some effort.

Finally, Marten felt secure enough in his position to approach One-Eyed Jack, the Irraka who would mentor him into the Lodge of Death. After his three months of tutelage, Marten underwent the riual funeral, attended by his pack. When Hithethal-Us, the Spirit of the Ashes of the Dead, arrived to welcome Marten into the lodge, he knew that he was finally ready to begin his real work - healing the city's scorched spiritscape and finding the ghosts of his mother and sister to beg their forgiveness and help put them to rest.

Marten hasn't seen his father in years, and he has an older brother Will who was out of the house the night of the fire. They've drifted apart since, partly due to Marten's new life as a werewolf and his incredible load of guilt over the fire itself, but they do still get together from time to time.
