Dear Maxine,

Thank you for forcing me to watch the sunrise. I know you had my best interests at heart. I apologize for my odd reaction.

I wanted to beg a favor of you. I know that, in China, you will do the right thing. However, even if events transpire, and it doesn't appear to be the right thing, I would like to ask you to help Rebecca and Henrik. They are good people and deserve a chance to be happy. I have failed to provide them with the assistance they needed. I understand that this may be a lot to ask (for some, doing the wrong thing can be as difficult as doing the right thing is for others). Anyhow, with any luck, things will shake out in a positive direction and there will be no conflict between the right thing and helping them.

You had asked if there was anything else that we could offer the Chinese, if turning over the stronghold would be insufficient. If it would help, you could let them know that Redland Jack would owe them a debt. This would likely hold no value for them, but it might amuse Li Mai.

Please don't share any of this with Henrik. When it comes to matters such as these, he often can't get out of his own way.

Your friend,

Redland Jack
