Deacon Obadias Kaine[edit]

History[edit]

Kaine's story is not one that is often repeated, nor often told. Indeed, he has only given the Lady-Captain the half truth that he had been traveling pilgrim routes for a time and had simply decided to establish himself on her ship due to the lack of experienced clergy on the ship. While what he said is the truth, it is far from the entire truth.

Kaine was born to a noble family on a distant Shrine World. The family he was a part of was deeply religious and he was born to be a Chaplin of one of the greater cathedrals of the planet. He always possessed a great reserve of charisma and willpower which caused his quick ascension through the ranks (though his noble heritage helped) but in the terms of courage and mental abilities he was less then great, rarely standing out. The one exception was when he joined the PDF forces of the planet to quell a massive mutant uprising, using his force of personality to whip the troopers into warriors that slaughtered nearly all the mutants, as well as those unfortunate enough to be in the combat zone as well. One of those unfortunates happened to be a rather high ranking cardinal on the shrine, stuck in danger in his attempt to flee with his life.

With the death of the cardinal, Kaine was kidnapped by forces of the church and tortured within an inch of joining the Emperor multiple times. It was during those multiple near-death experiences that Kaine realized that all Imperials were equal in the eyes of the Emperor. Only through greater and greater trials could one truly join the Emperor.

He was released soon after the realization occurred, the church believing that he would not be of any trouble before banishing him on a pilgrim ship. That was when he first started building his flock and, eventually, he came under them employ of Lady-Captain Lavesgrie.

Looks[edit]

Kaine is a thin, rather unassuming man in his mid twenties (strangely young for a priest) whose appearance seems at odds with the fiery spirit within him. He carries himself with a humble but slightly noble air, speaking softly but, when called for, carries a large metaphorical stick when he must. While it is clear from the sureness of his speech that he was noble born, he often places his sermons in ways that the flock can easily understand. This manner of preaching has won him many favors in the crew, as well as his belief in leading by example.

Kaine's dress lacks the large amount of ostentatious ornamentation that appears to be a requirement. Indeed, he is often seen in rather plain clothes, but always with the sign of the Aquila present. This style of dress expands itself to his chapel, which seems to bear little more then benches, a number of stained glass windows and candles, without even a pulpit for him to harp the words of the Imperial Creed. In some ways, Kaine appears to distance himself from the rest of the Ecclesiarchy and the few times when he is inebriated enough to talk about the Church shows that his words are not favorable.

Moves[edit]

His Will Be Done[edit]

When you set forth your flock to do His will, choose missions up to your flock’s fervor and roll +Will. On a 10+, all your missions are successful. On a 7-9, all but one of your missions are successful. On a miss, catastrophe all around.

Speak the Emperor's Truth[edit]

When you speak the Emperor’s truth to a mob, roll +Charm. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 1. Spend your hold 1-for-1 to have the mob:

  • bring people forward and deliver them.
  • bring forward all their precious things.
  • unite and fight for you as a gang (2-harm 0-armor size appropriate).
  • fall into an orgy of uninhibited emotion: copulating, lamenting, fighting, sharing, celebrating, as you choose.
  • go quietly back to their lives.

Confessor's Eye[edit]

When you read a person, roll +Will instead of +Adroit. In addition to the normal questions, you can ask:

  • Why do you feel guilt?
  • What punishment do you believe you deserve?
  • What is your single greatest lie?

Quotes[edit]

"My brethren, fellow sons of the God-Emperor on Terra, today my message is not one of peace, prosperity or self-reliance. Today my message is of war. War, the most blessed and purest form of worship to the God-Emperor. War is as simple as saving the souls of one lost and as complex as a las pistol round. War is the one DUTY that the Emperor requires of us if we are to serve him! War is calling, my brothers! Will you answer?!" --Aspirant Priest Obadiah Kaine prior to engaging in battle with a mutant uprising in his youth.

"Brothers and Sisters, we are gathered here to give thanks to the God-Emperor for providing us friends, family, companionship and grace in these troubled times. Today we give thanks to the God-Emperor for saving us from the temptations around us. In Mordaci twelve thirteen, the meek said..." -- Deacon Obadiah Kaine giving his Emperor Day sermon.
