Character Backstory[edit]

Danika was born in a small village in what was then Yugoslavia - her family was ethnically Croatian, but had Greek ancestors on her mother's side, and as a child, she loved hearing her grandmother's stories of the Greek gods and heroes.

When she was eleven, her childhood ended abruptly with the outbreak of the Bosnian War. As Serbian troops began their program of "ethnic cleansing", many in her village were forced to flee their homes. Danika's parents managed to distract the troops long enough to buy time for her to flee into the wilderness with some of the other children (she was the oldest), but when night fell, the troops were already closing in. As she and the others fled, they stumbled upon the ruins of an old altar. Danika, remembering the stories of Artemis as a goddess of the wilderness and protector of children, decided to pray, promising to dedicate herself to Artemis if she would help them. As she did so, a beam of moonlight shone down, illuminating her, and she heard a voice.

"Brave girl, I offer you the chance to become my huntress. If you pledge to protect the innocent, especially women and children, and to hunt the wicked, I shall grant you my blessing."

Danika agreed, and felt Artemis' power flow into her. With her new powers, she was able to defeat the pursuing soldiers and lead the children to safety. Since that day, over twenty years ago now, she has not physically aged, still appearing as an eleven-year-old girl. She continues to protect the innocent and hunt the wicked, as she has pledged to do.
