Because information and people are still quite mobile, people tend to move to places where like-minded people congregate. This has led to towns and even cities being dominated by religious cults. This has become so common that for most people the terms "cult" or "cultist" have lost their pejorative connotations except where a local cult is actually engaged in some antisocial behavior.
