NPCs[edit]

Anchors[edit]

Brenna Kerrigan is the elder sister of Leah Kerrigan. She has spent most of her life paralysed after contracting polio as a child. She was recently taken into hospital care after her parents died and her sister vanished; she is currently under observation following her miraculous recovery. She is a Love anchor.

Powers[edit]

Redex is the Power of Explosions. This man used to be a bomb jockey for the Outlaws motorcycle gang, rivals to the Hell's Angels. He went out with a bang, but his maniacal obsession with bombs enabled him to survive past death - these days he goes around as a skeletal biker, slowly collecting all the pieces of his corpse. He'll be a while. Every once in a while he mutters about duplicating the Big Bang, but nobody takes him seriously. In the meantime he's something of a connoisseur of bomb design, the aesthetics of mushroom clouds and the finer points of kitchen chemistry as they pertain to making things blow up. He inhabits and occasionally blows holes in the Plain of the First Shout.

Ian Kostock is the Power of Chaos. A former professor of quantum physics and chaos theory turned Noble, Kostock is obsessed with mastering the physics and mathematical equations behind all forms of chaos, destruction, and disorder. He has no plan to destroy himself once he's attained this knowledge in order to save humanity or the universe from chaos - he just wants to have it. He has no idea what he'll do if he ever obtains this information, either. A prolific worker, he maintains a network of very esoteric and very confusing equipment dispersed throughout Earth and the nearer parts of the solar system, gathering Prosaic information. Attempts to gather information on the Tree and parts beyond have had mixed results. He lives in Locus Sophia.

William Mbadjekwe is the Power of Cryptozoology - of Nigerian origin and highly educated in biology and zoology, William turned to the study of mysterious animals after a trip to the deeper parts of the jungle, wherein he discovered a bird species that was supposed to be impossible. Instead of being struck by dementia animus, he became fascinated and was marked for a soul-shard by his future Imperator. Since then he has traveled all over both Earth and the Tree, looking for creatures such as might have escaped greater Creation's notice - he has since found Jersey Devils, as well as bizarre species of reptilians living in the sewers of certain major cities, as well as one of the last dragons of Aelfheim. He lives in Locus Sophia.

Zainab Isfahani, Power of Morality, is an intensely religious individual. A devout Zoroastrian, her family fled Iran during the rise of Islam centuries ago and has dwelt in India ever since, typically holding some position of leadership in the tightly knit community. Zainab herself was considered for an Inquisitorial post, but her aversion to doing bad things, even in the pursuit of greater truths and especially in the event of failed investigations, led her to reject the role of an active agent. Instead, she sometimes acts as an expert witness and specialist in the area of motive - with her new divinity, she moved beyond one culture's perceptions of morality and now endeavours to know as much as possible. She lives in Locus Sophia.

Ritva Tuuri is a new experiment in Nobles of Potential. Previous practice had it that the owner of this shard should only be a prepubescent human or barely-developed other being, on the grounds that they have not yet realized anything and still possess their fullest potential. However, it was observed that Nobles of Potential frequently amounted to nothing - usually because their inexperience with any form of life led to their easy defeats through various means. In consequence, Ritva Tuuri, a classically trained Finnish opera singer just starting on the Italian opera circuit has been appointed as the Power of Potential. As one might expect, though, she is somewhat resentful - just as she was starting to make it big on her own power, she was snatched up and made a demigoddess so that now she does not know what to consider her own and what to consider the doings of a higher power. She lives a somewhat conflicted life on the Plain of the First Shout.

Proxenus, who holds the Power of Initiative, is very old compared to his compatriots. He is reputed to be at least 3,000 years old by mortal reckoning, which may or may not be due to the fact that he is a werewolf. He was also a soldier during Alexander the Great's conquests, but has mellowed somewhat since his days with his fellow Macedonians. These days he is more of a driving force for action by uniting other Nobilis in pursuit of different causes or goals - the iron fist is usually a second resort, especially with people he values as allies or friends. He is noted for his organizational skill as well - whether leading a small band of researchers or thousands of soldiers he always has a plan, and his tirelessness is legendary. He lives on the Plain of the First Shout.

Qing Ma is the current holder of the Power of Separation. In keeping with the academic nature of her Familia, she focuses heavily on studying the foundations of her Estate and attempting to reach a higher understanding of it. A side motivation for her has been determining how much of her original personality is left and how much has been subsumed by the spiritus dei - consequently she keeps certain aspects of her work secret from her siblings, as her sister Ritva would likely upset many carefully planned experiments in a quest for that information. She maintains formidable researches in sociology, physics, even applied linguistics - she is one of the leading Noble scholars on dialect drift in language, a purely academic pursuit among a society of creatures that mostly have the Gift of Tongues. She lives in Locus Sophia.

Maria Guadalupe is the Power of Impressions, the youngest member of her Familia. She is also an individual of unusual descent, even amongst Nobilis - she walked, fully formed, out of a depiction of the Lady of Guadalupe that hung over the fireplace at a family home in Monterrey, Mexico. The family, then on a trip to Veracruz, had given thanks after being the sole survivors of a plane crash and their belief gave Maria life. When she walked out of the house completely naked, she discovered the power of impressions when trying to get help and being unable to get help due to being stark naked, as well as being followed around by a pack of teenage boys with camera phones. Consequently, she became very conscious of giving a good accounting of herself and her actions at all times, eventually becoming a successful figure in high fashion marketing. Appointed Lady of Impressions, she lives on the Plain of the First Shout, dealing with both the physical as well as metaphorical implications of her place in life.

Imperators[edit]

Chancels[edit]

The Ziggurat is Ram-Khvastra's Chancel. At its center is an impossibly tall tower composed of hot, bubbling glass of many colors; at different times, different portions of the tower are transparent, translucent or completely opaque. A bright, constant light shines from within the tower through the transparent and translucent sections. The people of the Chancel once lived at the base of the ziggurat, but have continued to build outward as well as over the ruins of the past. This has been going on for some time now - centuries, millenia, nobody in the Chancel is quite sure thanks to the mindblowingly complex manner of time- and date-keeping used in the Chancel. The result is that there are portions of the Chancel in which you can descend into ancient ruins and, perhaps, never return. This is a regular occurrence. At the edges of the currently-inhabited city is a vast, seemingly endless tundra. Any observer would notice that the tundra was once a jungle, but it has since been frozen, petrified and turned into a mixture of crumbling stone and ice in the shape of forests, vines, bushes and jungle animals. These are used for building materials by the ever-expanding peoples of the Chancel. The paths into the Chancel from the Earth are located in Hong Kong.

The Plain of the First Shout is a wide open expanse that is mostly wide-open stony desert, split by mesquite and scrub brush. It is barren, apart from the few plants, for miles upon miles - what's more, most of it is flat, apart from a ring of hills and a few low stony mountains out at the very edges of the Chancel, looking out on nothing but a vast open desert with what looks like a small city at its core. It is said that this plain was created in the first three seconds of time, wherein a fertile field sprang from nothing in a second as Cneph's first breath blew over the land, existed for one glorious second as the first landscape in all Creation, and was then blasted into its current state by the unrefined power of Cneph's first word in the third second. The result lingers on today - it's said that the first people in the Chancel were some hapless pilgrims who wandered too deeply into the desert in search of the Holy Land. The city in the center is, these days, a set of concentric rings radiating from a central point - some claim the city center is built on a blast crater caused by the impact of the Creator's first word on anything in Creation. The oldest ring is in the middle - crude structures of mud brick and cut stone, slowly fanning outwards to feature Babylonian and Assyrian buildings, eventually terminating with buildings that would fit right in in modern day southern California or Nevada.

Locus Sophia consists primarily of rolling green hills with patches of tall trees and ravines full of briars make up the bulk of this place, an idyll of relative calmness. Rabbits and deer live among the trees while the occasional buffalo or auroch herd rumbles across the plains, tracked by long-legged wolves or the occasional displaced mountain lion. However, due to the slightly unusual nature of one of the inhabitants of the place, the fauna is never completely what it seems - one out of so many rabbits turns out to be a jackelope, there are reports of a miniature Nessie inhabiting one of the Chancel's many lakes, while the swampy region far to the north is the lair of at least one Mokèlé-mbèmbé. Urban centers dot the landscape - most of them are small, high-tech towns with solar panels, wind power and a wide assortment of other environmentally friendly features. The ones that house Noble residences reflect the natures of their powerful citizens, at least somewhat. The larger buildings in the towns tend to be universities with research centers, turning out well-educated individuals to maintain Chancel facilities and attempt to understand the higher and slightly more cryptic laws of physics at work in the pocket dimension.
