Ubiquitous Chang

Dire thoughts race through Ubiquitous Chang's mind as he attempts to stymy the young woman's blood loss. He had already tried to cut off her fire chi flow in a circuit around the heart to stabilize her, but it had failed. Chang's palms were soaking up quickly with her blood as he pressed them to her chest.

This wasn't part of the plan, thought Ubiquitous Chang. They aren't supposed to die when they hire me.

The girl, whose name was Dipping Swallow, convulsed as the last of her chi vanished from her body and she died.

Chang screams in frustration, and holds the dead Swallow tightly.

After the death of Dipping Swallow at the hands of a roving band of Blade Dogs, Ubiquitous Chang was shamed after having returned her body to her Clan. The remorseful Doctor had barely been able to speak to her parents. Chang offered to pay them money, but they did not want his coins. Mortified, Chang fled. Later that night, the Doctor vowed that he would never let a client die to his incompetence ever again! He would push himself to become the greatest healer the Wulin had ever known, and spread the gift of good health and providence to all of the land!

Ubiquitous Chang, already an avid journeyman, travelled far and wide. He sought to compile every medical technique known to the Wulin, and safe keep it within his mind. He went to see monks, wise women, other doctors -both practicing and retired- to gain their knowledge. Chang visited libraries and secret dojos to read their holy scriptures of prosperous health.

Before long,Ubiquitous Chang had become obsessed with his new mission. He started to experiment with unsafe chi-practices to better understand the physiology of the body. After a disastrous session of acupuncture upon his own body, guided by a notorious text by the name of the Black Desert Wind Scroll, Ubiquitous Chang contracted a terminal malaise! His body showed no outward signs of harm, but at night, he would sweat through terrible fevers, convulse and spit up bloody phlegm. Destitute and slowly dying, Ubiquitous Chang settled down in a sleepy little village known as Resting Place.

Chang woke up in sudden terror, shaking. He had coughed up more blood last night. He hadn't gotten much shut-eye. His throat and chest burned with the malaise caused by his improper application of the Black Desert Wind Scroll. Cast in shadows within the dank and dirty little shed he rented from the local glassblower, Ubiquitous Chang had resigned himself to an ignoble death outside the Wulin.

He reached out for his soiling pot, and got to his feet. Slid the door to his shed open, and ambled outside to the bushes and tipped his crockery upside down.

Chang noticed not alone. A tall, immaculately dressed man stood beside the meager path that led into Resting Place. He had long, black hair.

"You do not have to die," said the mysterious man.

Chang frowned. "What if I deserve to die?"

"If you join my organization, we can give you the resources to claim the Thousand Yin-Yang Manual. A Doctor of your reputation could elevate himself to becoming the finest Healer in all of the Wulin with such a text to guide him."

"The Yin-Yang Manual is just a legend."

A thin smile split the mysterious man's face. His laughter sounded like bells chiming. "No, it is not. Call me friend, and I can help you obtain it."

And so a spark of hope lit within Ubiquitous Chang, and he went with the man who introduced himself as Third Brother.
