Bradagh[edit]

The role of Bradagh within a clan is multi-faceted. He is the keeper of the clan's history, the lawspeaker and in times of war, the battle skald and piper. Although he is part of the clan he is apart from it also, deemed to be neutral in all respects even when passing judgement upon his own kin. The Bradagh will usually have 1 or 2 apprentices with him who are learning all the tasks involved.

The history of the clan is kept in the form of songs and poems. All of the existing history must be learnt by heart as an apprentice. The Bradagh is also responsible for committing new deeds and events to song and poem. Although others may also do this, if their poems are deemed worthy the Bradagh will learn that too.

As Lawspeaker the Bradagh is called upon to give judgement on trangressors of clan and tribal law. The chieftan will pass sentence but normally asks advice from the Bradagh. As Lawspeaker the Bradagh is answerable only to the gods and even the chieftan cannot go against his word. Another task is to travel to the 3 yearly Althing where all clan Bradaghs meet to discuss the law. It is a large event which all of the clans usually attend. Courts are held there for large disputes between clans, it is unusal for a Bradagh to be asked to make a judgement on his own clan but not impossible.

As Battle Skald the Bradagh pipes the clan warriors into battle and also recites epic poetry of bravery and daring performed by the warriors of the clan, this inspires his own warriors and demoralises the enemies. (If we are using magic this could be a spell of some kind) He will also write new poems about battles he is part of.
