Valerian Twobellies is a very unusual halfling. He's not soft. He's not particularly witty. And he's not at all averse to a bit of hardship or even a bit of ultraviolence when the situation calls for it. He is also completely lacking a sense of humour, at least when it comes to his favourite subjects, namely himself, his accomplishments, his conquests, his dignity, his abilities, etc.

Valerian does however like to eat. And cook. And he likes garish clothing, which he imagines makes up for the unfortunate disadvantage of his diminutive stature when it comes to impressing strangers, drawing the attention of women and intimidating enemies. In particular he likes to chew on an unlit cheroot, a habit he picked up by imitating a mercenary captain he was particularly impressed by, and he wears a flamboyant hat which is much too large for him in a not very subtle attempt to look taller.

Growing up, other halflings would probably have picked on him for his peculiar un-halfling like ways, but as he was better at pummeling, kicking, biting, pounding, threatening and general beating up than most halfling youngsters, this strangely wasn't as much of a problem as it could have been. In fact Valerian tends to assume that everyone will like and be impressed by him, after all who wouldn't?
