Motivations[edit]

Desire: Belonging. Vera wanted to come down to Earth to get away from the confines of Heinlein to a place where the air wasn't trying to kill you and you had room to move around. ...yeah, lots of New Angeles doesn't really fit that. And in the process, she lost her community, and what was left of it wanted to use her, or she had to let herself be used against... Finally she discovered how much she liked driving - something you just don't get to do on the moon unless you're a ristie or a prospector - but that still didn't fill the hole. She's kinda hoping the community of criminals she now mostly spends time around will have a place for her...

Fear: Humiliation. Vera was not very successful as a cop and she was often reminded of such. Compound that with the Loonie tendency to be awkward when first encountering various earthbound social situations for the first time, and... yeah. Lots of raw nerves there.

Strength: Curious. Most of the big jumps Vera's made in her life - especially into NAPD and then out of it - originally came from her wondering what life was like outside her own bubble, and finding out more about people than just the bare minimum.

Flaw: Rudderless. She wants to find out where she fits in, and that means she's sometimes far too likely to go with the flow of people around her. Also she's not great at long-term plans.

Contacts[edit]

NAPD bosses

  • Capt. Aya Vasquez, traffic (Uncompromizing and demanding, but not entirely hostile)
  • Capt. Carl Minamoto, counter-terrorism' '(Holds a grudge since that failed undercover op)

NAPD contact

  • Lt. Sakura Tucker, Vice (one of the people on the Force she stays in contact with, on the take due to a gambling problem)

Mafia smugglers

  • Slippery Jim Cucceli (friendly, competitive)
  • Twitchy Tina Sakharova (doesn't like new blood, not very trusting)

Backstory[edit]

Vera Selenium is a former NAPD traffic cop with a checkered service record that she'll protest isn't all her fault, but grumblingly admit that some of it is. She originally joined up in hopes of getting off the moon, which immediately soured most of her home neighborhood relationships so she has nothing to go back to up there. Earthside, she started off as a beat cop with hopes of making detective, but trouble kept following her. More than a few of those neighborhood relationships had been among the local criminal populations, and their connections in New Angeles tried to leverage that over her... and then her bosses tried to leverage her as an undercover double agent. She wasn't particularly suited for subterfuge, unfortunately; that operation went badly, bad publicity was had, lives were lost (criminal but also unfortunately-in-the-vicinity-of-criminals), and her chances of promotion into the upper ranks were pretty much gone. She used what tenuous pull she had left to beg off into traffic enforcement, which was supposed to uneventful enough - and low-prestige enough - that she could just finish out her career without attracting attention.

Yeah, that didn't work. Smugglers, street racers, she ended up 'lucking out' into having to deal with all of it. Too many crashed cars and hoppers. Accusations of being negligent or on the take. But... she actually found that she loved the chase, the action. When she finally ran down a smuggler, or they pulled something clever enough to impress her. She was never actually on the take... but she did actually let a few runners go after challenging them to a race and losing. Vera didn't do that until she was already disillusioned, though. She'd gotten tired of her bosses riding her ass for damaging NAPD property while they moved Heinlein and Earth to protect cops who mowed down disenfranchistas and 'terrorists' (Loonies and Martians in the wrong place at the wrong time). Finally, she gave up on things ever improving, and turned in her badge.

So now Vera's running courier jobs for anyone who'll give her a vehicle to do it, in hopes of actually owning her own soon. Of the various orgcrime groups, she feels least worried about the Tri-Maf and is willing to take jobs for them - even knowing they'll likely take advantage of her ex-cop status. She owes a few other Mafia smugglers anyway, who she talked into letting themselves get caught (after already dropping off their cargo) so she could make quota in those last few weeks and get out with a good discharge.
