Background[edit]

The Blood Reavers are among the most feared and hated chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. Descended from the Blood Angels, they are predators first and foremost, often consuming the blood of their prey (which is anyone they're assigned to kill), whether they're in the thrall of the Red Thirst or not, in addition to killing them. The Imperium, and particularly the Inquisition, often uses them as terror troops, a task they excel at.

Despite their terrifying reputation and the actions backing it up, most Blood Reavers bear no specific malice towards their prey - they're hunters simply because that's the divine destiny laid upon them by Sanguinius, and hunting the prey they've been assigned is how they fulfill that destiny; to do otherwise would be a blasphemous rejection of their assigned role. Vladimir Priest, by contrast, relishes his role as a hunter. He loves the pursuit, the fight, the kill, the challenge - everything. He often takes trophies from particularly challenging kills in addition to drinking their blood (the prey's weapon if it's an intelligence race, a claw or tooth if it's a creature like a Tyranid).

Vladimir often views the xenos he hunts as a member of the Deathwatch as little more than exotic food. In his estimation, xenos are weak in either mind, body or both, and therefore deserving only of the role of prey. His view on humans is a bit more nuanced - while humans are undoubtedly weaker in body and mind than Astartes such as him, the very existence of the Astartes proves to Priest that there is great potential that can be unlocked within humanity. As a result, unless they are his assigned prey, he tends to treat normal humans with pity - after all, they have not ascended to the same heights he and other Astartes have.
