Background[edit]

DRAFT
Vradok was born to a working class family on a small planet called Penkwar on the fringes of the Star Confederation. Penkwar was important to the Confederation for a couple of reasons: millions of tons of rare ore necessary for the construction of starships lurked deep beneath it's inhospitable surface, and it was a vital refueling stop along the Persephone-Tenalphi J2 Trade route. The tainted atmosphere and remote location discouraged settlement except by the most hardy of men and women. The Granget Mining Consortium bought the mining rights from the government and set about building rudimentary planetside settlements. To attract a labor force, they promised high wages and encouraged family relocation to the world by providing necessary infrastructure. The project has been successful. Profits are high, populations are growing steadily, and at least a few of the settlements rate as small towns.

Vradok grew up in one of these towns. His parents worked hard, but always found time to devote to their son. Vradok participated in various sports which were encouraged by officials as a way of keeping youth occupied in an otherwise dull environment. His father operated one of the colossal mining bots that churned deep into the planet. His mother worked in one of the air purification plants. While everyone planetside knew the mining operations are what kept this planet relevant, it was the air purifiers that made it possible. Any foray outside required a mask to survive, while most all interior spaces boasted pure, breathable air thanks to the advanced technology of the purification systems and the superlative efforts of the men and women who maintained it. The AirCorps, as these people were called, were highly respected by most (as in any community, exceptions existed. Most of the exceptions tended to be incompetent executives who rarely went planetside).

It was therefore understood by the community that air was life, and it was not taken for granted. No shortcuts were tolerated, redundant systems throughout, and a general understanding that incompetence or complacency in regards to life support usually guaranteed a one-way passage off world. Any malevolent intent towards air supply--unfortunately, there have been incidents--always results in a swift trial and swifter execution for the perpetrator.

It was no surprise then that Vradok's mother instilled in him a deep understanding of the importance of the many different systems responsible for sustaining life on the planet. Vradok was generally a good student, even during the rebellious teenage years when many his age chaffed at the confines of the difficult existence here and found other less constructive ways to occupy their time. In fact, he had a keen interest in the specific technical details of the support systems and how they worked. He exhibited a natural talent and could often be found tinkering with high-tech spare parts he scavenged from out-of-service machines and robots. Vradok's mother astutely realized he needed a better education than was generally available on this world.

Fortunately, his mother was well liked at the AirCorps, and after calling in a few favors, a private tutor was hired. This tutor happened to be responsible for educating a few of the Granget executive children as well, and therefore had access to some of the best remote curriculum vids available. Vradok's parents made sure he understood the significance of this unique educational opportunity, and Vradok did not disappoint. He applied himself vigorously to his studies and his natural aptitude with engineering concepts flourished.

When he was 17, disaster struck. Vradok was pulled from his studies and rushed to a medical clinic. He was horrified to find his mother near death, a victim of prolonged contact with unconditioned air. Details were sketchy, but apparently she had been working at a remote air purification station to repair a faulty processor. Vradok knew that multiple backup systems would also need to fail before she would have been exposed to tainted atmosphere. He also knew she was smart enough to always have her personal issue air filtration mask. Something didn't add up. He and his father both asked increasingly probing questions, but the AirCorps supervisor either was an idiot or misinformed. Vradok then noticed a sudden change in his father's demeanor and a unmistakable signal from him to stop asking questions.

His mother's prognosis was poor. Granget medical facilities were not advanced, and exposure to tainted air usually caused severe cognitive brain damage. She was kept in an induced coma and moved back into their home while awaiting transport offworld to better medical facilities.

Two days later, no medical transport had yet arrived. Vradok was studying in his mother's quarters when a group of men arrived. His father spoke with them in the common area for hours, in mostly hushed tones. Vradok overheard them talking about a Star Confederation Navy cutter that had just arrived on an unscheduled stop. He also heard something about an official Navy investigation into the accident at the remote air purification station. Then, something infuriated his father and he ordered the men to leave.

Vradok tried to make sense of it all, but before he could confront his father, a monitor announced another visitor. This time, it was Dr. Orick, a Navy surgeon from the Navy cutter Prodigy. He politely told Vradok's father that he had been informed of the accident, and would like to examine Vradok's mother. After thorough testing, the surgeon told them it was possible he could treat her onboard the Navy cutter, which was equipped with a state-of-the-art medical bay. His father didn't hesitate--she was immediately transferred to the starship.

His mother was aboard the Prodigy for two weeks. Twice a week, Vradok and his father were permitted to visit her. They took a shuttle to orbit and docked with the cutter. For Vradok, this was the first time he had been in orbit, much less off the surface of the planet! He was fascinated with the technology that made this starship possible.

His mother was making tremendous progress on her recovery. She could no longer walk, and she would be retired from the AirCorps, but Vradok was ecstatic to see her alive and communicating again.

During the visits, Dr. Orick showed Vradok around the medical bay and answered as many of Vradok's questions as he could regarding the medical technology and equipment. It didn't take the doctor long to realize Vradok's intellect and potential. He arranged to have the ships XO take Vradok on a complete tour of the Prodigy. Vradok was especially interested in the Engineering section. The immaculately polished jump drive hummed. To Vradok, it seemed to whisper of possibilities and adventure.

His mother returned home after her discharge. But things were somehow different. His father would not discuss the anomalies surrounding the accident and his mother could hardly recall the event. The Prodigy left orbit, and Vradok never heard again about the supposed investigation of the accident. The generous AirCorps pension checks came periodically, but no AirCorps execs or staff ever stopped in to inquire on his mother.

Dr. Orick gave Vradok his vox contact info and told him to think seriously about applying for a Navy career. In fact, Vradok found himself thinking about it quite often.

The next several months Vradok prepared for exams. He graduated at age 18 with an Associates in Sciences degree and a passion to join the Navy.
