Dr. Alexandra "Alex" Russell was an Australian scientist working for the first Project Torchwood during the Second World War, when she was paralyzed in a bad accident in her lab. In light of the injury and strange disappearances of the metahumans and extraordinary knowledge from the world Dr. Russell opts to transfer her consciousness to a robotic body of her own design. The new body matches the features of her old one, only idealized, corrected for symmetry, and otherwise rendered perfect. Following the transfer she "slept," sealed up in her lab underneath the vastly limited Torchwood, until she was rediscovered during the re-expansion following the Anomaly and the fall of Zenita. Modern Torchwood head Christopher Brycewood, recognizing Dr. Russell as an extraordinary resource, hid her origins and rehired her for the modern organization.

Her exceptional skills and knowledge of the alternative history apparently destroyed by the Event rapidly made her one of Torchwood's most valuable assets, so much so that when David Moss was recruited after the Mekaniak's attack on the London Olympics he was permanently assigned as her personal bodyguard.

Dr. Russell's past has recently come back to haunt her, literally, as her former fellow Torchwood scientist and intimate friend Harry Englund, who betrayed Russell and the United Kingdom by turning traitor and escaping to Germany, has reappeared in incorporeal form connected to the Camberwell Slasher, one Gregory Resnig, acting under control of a psychic weapon based on Englund's design.
