BACKSTORY

Nathan Clarence Appleby is the second son and third child of an old British noble family. With plenty of money and influence but little responsibility, he could have become a hedonist and wastrel. Instead he pursued higher education, then went exploring, traveling to India, China, Africa, and the South Seas. He is fascinated by foreign cultures, especially their mystical traditions; although he is not (yet?) a believer in the supernatural, he has seen enough inexplicable things to be open-minded about it. He came to America a year ago and thence headed out to the legendary Wild West, curious to learn the truth of the many tall tales.

Nathan is polished, well-spoken and unfailingly polite, and has a knack for ingratiating himself with the locals. Even when angry he does not lose his temper; rather, he becomes cold and clipped. He holds himself to the standards of a proper British gentleman at all times: behave with honor, do not lie, respect and protect women and children, and show courage and dignity.
