Background notes As a 20-year Bundeswehr veteran, he's spent the vast majority of his adult life in uniform, following a long-established family tradition. Since leaving the army in 2011, he's gone into business as a private military contractor, mainly doing advisory work for NATO forces.

Raised in East Berlin during the Cold War, Matthias was a conscript in the National People's Army at the time of German reunification. After the NPA was integrated into the Bundeswehr, he applied to re-join and was accepted into officer training. His army career was one of slow, steady progress through the ranks. He was promoted to Captain (Hauptmann) just prior to his deployment to Uzbekistan with ISAF; while there he was wounded on a sortie into Afghanistan, and although he recovered well, his departure from the forces followed shortly afterward.

Matthias has a straightforward, businesslike manner, but has a reputation as someone who works hard and plays hard. He fences (a hobby he picked up at officer school), he enjoys both jogging and hiking, and he plays a lot of poker. He's a firm atheist, and prefers not to talk about religion at all. Unlike many Berliners, he can't stand fruity beers; he drinks Kölsch if he can get it.

Family and friends: Matthias is a person who does not form close friendships readily. Like many Germans, he finds the American (and to an extent British) custom of referring to friendly acquaintances as 'friends' strange. One of his closest comrades-in-arms from officer school, and one of the only soldiers he'd ever considered a friend, was Walther Ostendorf; Walther was killed by an IED in Helmand in 2008.

Matthias lives alone, and is on good speaking terms with most of the people in his apartment block, especially the concierge, but not close to any of them. He has a few regular sparring partners - all serving Bundeswehr officers, mostly Heer - at his fencing club. He's in touch with a few other people from the army, too.

Matthias is functionally asexual; he's never had any strong romantic inclinations, and is not sexually motivated to any significant degree. Both his parents are dead; he misses them, and is pleased they both lived to see German unification, and their children grown up to good careers. He has two younger siblings: a brother, Andreas, who's a stockbroker in Frankfurt am Main, and a sister, Gerda, who works for the Hamburg State Government. Long separation from them on deployment has cooled family relationships considerably; he considers himself lucky if he sees them once a year on St Sylvester's Day (New Year's Eve).
