*Fell in love with flight when his parents took him to see the Five Blackbirds, the first (and as far as I can tell only) black flying circus. 
*By the time he got older, the age of flying circuses was waning, but studying engineering to learn more about aeronautics.
*Stumbled upon a way to make Daedalium, an alloy that was strong and was able to generate tremendous amount of lift. Something,something technobabble flying on Earth's magnetic field.
*When discovery is ignored, makes flight suit and joins one of the last Flying Circuses as the Mysterious Blackbird. A gimmick the circus likes, since the suit wasn't technically an airplane new government regulations regarding airplanes didn't apply.
*Did some minor crime-fighting during this time.
*Signed up for the military when he heard the government was looking for people with extraordinary abilities.
