She hunted him down, tracked him by the trail of adoring communities he left in his wake, but when the time came to weave her spell, to trap his heart between her skeins of fate, so that when the time came he would fall, she found that she could not do it. For too long she had stared at the sun, and now the rest of the world was dim and gray. She did not know what she would do without her sun, that knight in shining armor whom she had encountered ten thousand times under fate’s disguise, that knight who had never seen her true face, her true eyes.<br>

And then fate decided for her, as the hammer-blow came and the Chosen of the Maidens scattered or fled or died. The adversary came for her as well, fire and sword, but, with the help of her knight, she beat it back, and, exhausted, dropped her facade.<br>

He did not resent her deception; in fact, forgave her for it without even a passing glance. There was to be a Deliberative, he said, of the Solar Exalted, and of the Lunars, and of those Sidereals who had survived. She should accompany him, he said, for it was their duty to the peoples of this besieged Creation to put aside their conflicts and make things right. She followed him, pulled as inescapably as a planet around a sun.''<br>
