At first, this drew them closer together, but as the interest gradually took them down more and more divergent paths, it became instead a source of tension.

He always saw her much like one might their best friend’s little sister and she was one of the few people that Ravel showed any protectiveness toward even as a young boy. After they saw the Empress, and their roles began to reverse, Ravel did his utmost to save her, to turn her from the path of cruelty, though of course it wasn’t enough. It was this protectiveness, this desire to save her, that was almost his undoing. He went to comfort her after the Cynis Garden party not long after he’d taken his vows. Ravel thought he could pull her back from the brink; he certainly never meant to sleep with her. One thing led to another, though, and it happened. Before she woke the next morning, he fled back to the monastery to confess and atone, deeply ashamed of what he had done. He doesn’t blame Kythri for what happened, however – rather it’s another sign of his failure to live up to the ideals he set for himself and his continued failure to save her from what he once was. (I'm picturing something along the lines of the two spending quite some time sitting and catching up, her being upset about something, he tries to comfort her, and things eventually drifting from innocent to...far less so, though probably with more than a little encouragement in this direction on her part. What she thought of the fact that he was gone the next morning, I can only imagine...)
