Uth Matar is the name of the military tradition that educates young Halorians.  At the age of 8 children goes to live in academies that begin to teach them the basics of military life, and combat skills.  Here they have no names or not contact with their biological family.  The training is brutal, and the children often find themselves in mortal combat with their peers.  The children stay in the academy until they are 17, at which point they are transferred to the Halorian military.

About 10-12% of the children do not survive Uth Matar.
