Alexis Ferrer is a newly minted surgeon, just out of residency at St Luke's in Dallas Texas. All her life, everything has just fallen into place for Alexis: the right money, the right talents, the right disposition to drive herself through the backbreaking labor of med school. If there's one word to describe Dr. Ferrer, it's overachiever: top of her class at UW, former high school gymnastics finalist, Krav Maga enthusiast, yada yada yada. And through all this she maintained an upbeat, positive, can-do attitude. Some of her co-workers find it sickening how she manages to cheerfully persevere for an entire hospital shift on four hours of sleep, half a grapefruit, and an ipod full of Ke$ha.
And then. one morning, she develops this... hunger for something. A void that all the caffeine and macrobiotic shakes in the world couldn't fill. It's normal to find your concentration quickening when you cut into a patient, but surely it isn't right to salivate, is it?
Dr. Ferrer is secretly terrified that she is becoming a vampire.

Alexis is in her early thirties, with an average height and build, a general expression of hopeful good cheer, and the kind of ambiguously ethnic features that you used to see in 1940s movies (Mexican/Hungarian American, for the record). When not working she generally wears casual but expensive clothing and a pair of small round glasses. She isn't beautiful, but she's pretty in a kind of offhandedly careless way that tends to make people file her away as either a New Librarian or Clever Sorority Girl. She also has a strong Texas accent.
