Maugre is a fit man in his mid 50s.  He stays clean shaved, including all the (remaining) hair on his head.  He has an active mind and is interested in everything and everyone.  The locals accept him as the local ruler and religious leader and Maugre shows genuine affection for them:  affection enough to have taken for of the local women as wives/consorts.  There's little doubt that everything Maugre done is done for the good of Soldier Port and for his own rule, and he makes no pretense about this.
