Maenad is Drunken Monkey's superhero roommate. She's from Italy originally, and is the second-youngest daughter of a family of supervillains who model themselves after figures from Roman mythology. As a teenager, she rebelled against her family by deciding to become a superhero, and took her name from the Dionysian wild women of Greek myth as a sign of rebellion. When it became clear that the extent to which they wouldn't tolerate this behavior was potentially life-threatening, she sought asylum in the U.S., settling in Empire City.
Mae, as her friends call her, is a full-time superhero and doesn't bother maintaining a secret identity. She's been a setting precedent for the concept of "superhero as celebrity," and keeps herself and Nadine living in a pretty comfortable style as a result.
She's a classic Amazonian powerhouse character, all flying and punching and lifting buses and possibly firing some kind of energy beam at bad guys. Despite all this, she's a supporting character only in Drunken Monkey's comic, mainly being there as a friend and confidante while simultaneously making Nadine feel less successful at superheroing, earning money, and life in general by simply being so fabulous.
