Background: The "good kid" in his father's eye, he joined the Marines. Abandoned his post under fire because of a crime ring on his ship; they were in position to duck the trouble, and got him sentence to death for cowardly desertion. He panicked and fought his way out when they came for him, and is now on the run. (Actually, by now, the Marines are investigating the crime ring, and probably want him as witness rather than as a felon to execute, but he doesn't know this.) His father now shelters him.
