Perception

Perception skills describe a character ability to be aware of its surrounding. There is two ways of using your perception. You can use your perception as a normal skill when you are actively searching for something. You can also use your perception as a Resistance when an opponent tries to do something without you noticing what is going on. Your perception resistance is your appropriate perception skill ranks + 10.

Listen

Ability Wisdom
Action Quick
Armor Penalty None
Untrained Yes
Concentration No

Description: Your Listen check reflects how quiet the noise is that you might hear.

Check: The following table shows some example of Listen DC needed to hear a certain noise.

Listen DC Sound
-10 A battle.
0 People talking up.
5 A person in medium armor walking trying not to make any noise.
10 An unarmored person walking trying not to make any noise
15 People whispering.
20 A cat stalking.
30 An owl gliding in for a kill.

Some conditions can make hearing a noise more difficult. While trying to listen something far way, you received a -1 range penalty per 10 ft. of distance to your Listen check.

Some other examples are on the following table.

Listen DC Modifier Condition
+5 penalty Through a door
+15 penalty Through a stone wall

Read Lips: To understand what someone is saying by reading lips, you must be within 30 feet of the speaker, be able to see him or her speak, and understand the speaker's language. (This use of the skill is language-dependent.) The base DC is 15, but it increases for complex speech or an inarticulate speaker. You must maintain a line of sight to the lips being read. If your Spot check succeeds, you can understand the general content of a minute's worth of speaking, but you usually still miss certain details.

Total Failure : When reading lips a total failure means that you did not read the lips correctly and you get an incorrect message. Action: To read lips, you must concentrate for a full minute before making a Spot check, and you can't perform any other action (other than moving at up to half speed) during this minute. Try Again: You can try to spot something that you failed to see previously at no penalty. You can attempt to read lips once per minute.
