Episodes

Background

Alice was a war orphan. An abandoned field mine took her arms, and an unscrupulous surgeon more interested in forwarding his experiments than doing right by a victim of senseless violence, replaced them with shoulder-to-finger cybernetic implants.

He also gave her Jak Jak. To facilitate her recuperation, he said.

The procedures and therapies involved in attaching and adapting to the artificial limbs spanned first months and then years. Even with Jak Jak in her ear, it could be unbearable, but the AI knew all the things and he constantly laid those things in front of her, filling her mind and challenging her skill.

In time, Alice learned enough to assist the surgeon in his experiments. The things she laid her hands to were simultaneously horrifying and oddly detached. She might be there still if soldiers hadn't come and dragged him away.

Warned by Jak Jak, she fled the compound ahead of the Surgeon's arrest and disappeared into the streets and alleys of the biggest city that that rock could offer to swallow her. She traded her skill with scalpel and sutures for protection and food and eventually learned to fight and con and sneak shoulder to shoulder with the thugs who took her in, and she quietly carved out a niche for herself on those dark byways.

That was a lifetime ago. She had since traded broken streets on a broken rock for ships and space stations, and for the most part she avoided craning her neck over her shoulder to see if the past was catching her up. She preferred to look - and move - forward.

Just her and Jak Jak coasting the black black.
