Jack is a professor of economics who has been put on indefinite leave from his university. He is a gaunt man, clean-shaven with a short, not particularly stylish haircut. He generally dresses in a shabby, old-fashioned suit typical of academia. He joined the group in December 1931 when he was on the ship to visit his sister in the Faeroes. He is an intelligent (and intellectual) sort of fellow. He is frequently contrary and often takes the opposite position on issues from everyone else. He considers himself witty. He tends to alternate between brash outspokenness and humble apologetics.
