A large force of lizard-folk sacked a human outpost near the edge of the nearby swamp (Dire Fens). The party was asked to investigate, as the lizardfolk have never been aggressive in the past. They journeyed by sea to a small refugee village on the shore of the swamp where they met a lizardman who fled his tribe. The lizardman told them an evil tribe of powerful lizard-folk (the Black-Scales) had come to dominate his tribe (Red-Spines), and forced them into the war with humans. The tribe journeyed to the Red-Spine village, offering to help the Red-Spines throw off the yoke of the Black-Scales. The Red-Spine Chieftain required evidence of the party's ability to do this, telling them to get rid of some orcs who had invaded Red-Spine Territory recently. The party destroyed the orc outpost, killing many including the leader until the rest fled. The Red-Spines agreed to work with the party. Next the party journeyed to another Tribe, the Yellow-Tails. The Yellow-Tail shaman tested the party with a series of riddles, which they solved, and now the Yellow-Tails are allied with the party and the Red-Spines. The last piece of the puzzle is the Green-Backs tribe. The Black-Scales killed the original chieftain of the Green-Backs and installed a puppet chieftain, who now rules over the Green Backs, and is protected by Black-Scale bodyguards. The Red-Spine and Yellow-Tail shaman have told the party that the Green-Back shaman does not like this arrangement, so the party is trying sneak a symbol into the hut of the Green-Back shaman in their village that will cause him to retreat to a holy place alone, where they hope to talk him into helping them overthrow the puppet chieftain and win the Green-Back tribe to their cause.

While attacking the orcs, Darithe donned a magic mask found during their [[Landsoftheblacksea:Main_Page/adventures/true_faith_murders | last adventure]], which they find is cursed. She cannot remove it, and it drains Strength from her every day. Asking the lizardmen shaman for help, they are directed to "Na-Bu", who lives beyond the Green-Backs village in a place called the Rotwood.  They enter Rotwood, a strange part of the swamp devoid of living vegetation and overgrown with huge, strange fungus and mushrooms.  They find ruins, where they are attacked by a strange vaporous creature, but saved when Nabu Shum-Iber comes to their rescue.  He trades removal of Darithe's cursed mask for her magical cloak of concealment.

The party then returns to complete their mission with the Green-Backs. They manage to infiltrate the symbol provided by the Yellow-Tail Shaman into the hut of the Green-Back Shaman. The Green-Back shaman then meets them in secret, and makes the recommendation that one of them should challenge the puppet chieftain to single combat, as his champion.  If they win, the Green-Back Shaman gets to pick the new chief.  If they lose, both the challenger and the Shaman pay with their life.

Violet issues the challenge, and fights the Green Back Chieftain in single combat, without armor or weapons. Violet manages to strangle the puppet chieftain to death, winning the challenge. The Black-Scale bodyguards move in to slay her, but are stopped by the Green-Backs.

The lizardmen direct them to a hermit who lives in a place called the Rotwood, a strange part of the swamp devoid of living vegetation and overgrown with huge, strange fungus and mushrooms.  The hermit, Nabu Shum-Iber, turns out to be a retired adventurer suffering a curse that makes him a half-man/half-vulture beast.  He trades removal of Darithe's cursed mask for her magical cloak of concealment.

Within days, the Yellow-Tails and Red-Spine chieftains arrive with their shamans and warriors.  An assault is planned on the Black-Scale Village, where apparently there are still human prisoners from the recent raids being held, and where the dreaded Black-Scale Shaman resides.  The advice is that if the Shaman can be killed or captured, the Black Scales will lose their will to fight.

The allied shaman agree that it is very likely the Black-Scale shaman retreated to the Temple of the Scaled God, which is a short journey from the Black-Scale village.  The Lizardmen will not accompany the party to the Temple, needing to tend to their wounded and because the Temple is taboo and fearsome to them.

The party and former prisoners journey to the nearby temple of the Scaled God, where they think the shaman retreated to.  Almost immediately they are attacked by magic spells from within.  They fight a number of undead animals that guard the temple rooms before finally encountering a human spellcaster.  Many of the party and former prisoners are slain in the resulting battle, and the ones that live (Violet, Fariya, Gabriel, and Darithe) are captured, waking up in iron cages, stripped, bound and gagged.  The group manages to escape.
