Depending on how a particular magical system works it refers to the condition a mage arrives at when they have performed magic far beyond their ability or endurance.  As an example, a mage in many worlds who practices manna-based magics has a pool of personal manna connected to him. (Spell Points)  Artifacts, drugs, magics of many kinds might add or multiply the amount of manna a mage can use to empower his spells.  This pool of manna may be restored in many ways including rest, time, potions, artifacts, etc.
