A Momentous Proposal

Dionysius approaches Lady Catherine as she steps from the carriage outside the Bowe Street Court, tugging gently on the edge of her bustle. As she leans over, nearly double, to hear his fervent whispers, he speaks quite forcefully into her proffered ear.
"My lady, it is imperative that arrangements be made most immediately," he exhorts. "Mr has in all ways, in all eys, offered egregious and incontrovertable offense."
With a huff, he silences her inevitable protests by pressing a diminuative finger to her lips. "Arrangements for marriage must be prepared to be presented for your father's consent in the morning. Behavior such as has occured is a scandel between two intended for one another. It is destruction for a woman alone."

---

She smiled gently, not indulging in the urge to kneel. It had offended him in the past, the action more of what a mother did for a child rather than an adult. “Don’t you think that we have a few other things to concern ourselves with, Neecy? Other things seem to take precident.”

---

Ezekiel looks at Dionysius and then at Lady Katherine and as he as does, the briefest hint of a smile crosses his face and then he turns to the small man tugging at his knee. "Do you not think, Monsieur," Ezekiel says seriously, "that we should ask the lady what she desires? Perhaps she does not wish to marry me. I have, I am told, been referred to as an eccentric religious fanatic. I can only promise her a life of adventure and perhaps she desires more." His tone of voice is not one of innocent misunderstanding but of seriousness and a full understanding of the boundaries crossed.

He turns to Lady Katherine. "Milady," he nods, "do you have an opinion on the matter at hand?"

---

Dionysius quickly ejaculates, "She accepts. Is done, c'est vous plais?" More calmly, he soothes in his oiliest voice, "no time for the grande mal of petitie morte, non? We have to save the England, non?"

---

Ezekiel, holding tight to his silver headed cane with one hand, lowers himself onto one knee. He first looks at Dionysius eye to eye and says, "We will do this my way," a pause, "...*our* way or not at all, sir. And I would hear an answer from the lady's lips, not yours, if you please." He then turns to Lady Katherine and takes her hand into his. The warmth of her hand feels nice and it reminds him how she held his hand as they ran through the streets in chase of that Russian thief. She could be someone who could stand with him in his quest, if God was willing.

"Lady Katherine, I give you my earthly devotion if you are willing and I humbly ask for your hand in marriage." He then bowed his head and kissed her hand held in his.

---

Her eyes widened, a faint blush tinging her cheeks. She swallowed, straining to take a deep breath to gather her composure. "I would be most honored, dear sir." She took another breath, looking down at the man who would be her husband, searching his eyes for a moment, seeking to see if there was regret. She would still answer "yes," but she would know if he was being pressured beyond his own desires. She cursed the corset; it was hard to breathe in the blasted thing at the best of moments, but the excitement of the chase and the romance of the moment was proving it difficult to manage and find air. "Ezekiel, please stand," she murmured softly. "My husband must stand at my side and I at his. We are to be partners, n'est pas ma cherie?" He was so very handsome and the crush that she had just realized she had on him was frightening in its depth.

---

Ezekiel looked into her eyes and saw the question in hers. He smiled, a quiet smile that nonetheless made his face light up. "Nothing less than partners and perhaps more, mon trésor." He then in a softer voice, meant only for her, said, "Unexpected, but certainly not unwanted, Katherine." He kissed her hand once more and then pushed himself up using his cane. He could feel his knee protest slightly. Count your blessings, he thought. It might have chosen to go out on you. It certainly had before.

"Now," he proclaimed once he was standing again, "to the other matter before us. Queen and country stood aside for the matter of marriage but now calls our attention once more."
