Alain De'Varre is the youngest Chief Scientist in Aguban memory, but no-one disputes his qualifications for the job. Born on the streets and soon orphaned, he was raised in a Mundus Humanitas orphanage, but he never lost the mental toughness, resourcefulness and raw ambition that his early years on the street taught him. His prodigious intellect was quickly recognized by the orphanage, and there was some talk of training him for the priesthood, but before that came to pass another quality of his was noticed: the Bright Mark. Frightened and a little intimidated, the orphanage authorities sent him to the wealthy and secretive Psychologist's Foundation, where he struggled to make up for the deficit in his education thus far as compared to the noble children who surrounded him. Alone and friendless, he was driven onwards by his intellect and ambition, coupled with a burning desire to prove himself better than the pampered nobles who looked down on him. As a result, he succeeded where many others failed, and was at last accepted as a Psychologist in his own right.

That didn't mean he stood a chance of rising any further in the Foundation however - passing examinations was one thing, but gaining entrance into the "old boy's club" was another. Alain didn't bother wasting his energy - instead, he signed up with the Aguban Hammer fleet, becoming a science officer, before taking his skills and expertise into the private sector. Among the scientists, he found a community where the facts of his birth were not as important as his exciting new theories and obvious genius. When coupled with his knowledge of Psychology, this was enough to win him the support of enough of his peers to assume the post of Chief Scientist when the old one was executed for sedition in the wake of the Darikahn takeover...a mistake Alain has been smart enough to take to heart. Nevertheless, he is still irritated by governmental restraints on his research, and fiercely ambitious...and as a result, recently he has been engaged in a high stakes gamble, collaborating with the Vaylen smuggler Kasha Scarlet in return for her supplying him with rather extra-legal merchandise. Whilst he is not foolish enough to fail to recognize the danger she poses, he reasons that he can use and outwit her, turning on her when he has achieved his aims.

N.B. Alain De'Varre is a character in Aguba, a Burning Empires campaign.

Beliefs[edit]

  • My plan cannot fail...I have calculated every last variable. I must not let fear and doubt cloud what I know to be mathematical truth.
  • The Inquisition is the enemy of all free-thinking men. I will destroy this Inquisitor's arguments and send him running home with his tail between his legs.
  • Elias Aguba is a gifted scientist whose research could be very useful to me. I will not stand by and see him waste his potential arbitrating between a bunch of squabbling nobles.
