The existence of mutant telepaths has allowed the setting's neurologists to understand the human brain far better than in our world. Indirectly, this understanding has led to great progresses in the field of artificial intelligence: The first truly self-aware programs began appearing in the 80s. However, the process of AI creation remains far from an exact science; while rebel AIs are less common than popular fiction might suggest, it is common for two AIs that were supposedly identical to end up with widely different personalities and abilities. This (and the need for vast computing resources) means that artificial intelligences remain unique and uncommon.

Of the few sentient AIs in existence, a couple are more well-known than others: Thermakron, despite its mysterious origins, has recently joined the Global Champions; Overseer, originally a creation of the KGB, currently works for Professor Cryo.
